NTP time sync on Kubuntu 14.04 LTS

Anyone else notice it not working? I had configured it for automatic time synchronization via the KDE clock widget, but I noticed this morning that system time had drifted off by several seconds. I went ahead and configured the ntp service "the old fashioned way" (installed the ntp package and manually edited the /etc/ntp.conf file to point at my file server, which is set up as a local time server). We'll see if that works any better.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

I was on Ubuntu 14.04 for a couple of years and had the time sync configured via /etc/ntp.conf and never had a problem with it. I have my server set to some external NTP servers and then it broadcasts on my LAN. I would occasionally check with an "ntpq -p" and it was always synchronised. I've upgraded to 16.04 and it is working fine there as well.

Yeah, it seems to be tracking with sub-millisecond accuracy now that I set it up manually. I have no idea what KDE was doing.

Not using chrony instead of ntpd was it?

There was a process named ntpd running but it was definitely not the "normal" one, since the ntp package was not installed, /etc/ntp.conf did not exist, and the time was not being synced properly. :roll:

Instead of configuring multiple servers I just use one of the ntp.org pools. Since I'm in the US, I use us.pool.ntp.org. Canada should be ca.pool.ntp.org. They'll round robin to the server closest to you. Your internet latency does actually matter--somewhat--as to accuracy, so using a server close to you will get you as accurate as possible. Not that you guys didn't already know that. :)

Yup, I'm familiar with the pool. I even used to have a publicly accessible server that participated in the pool (back when my internet connection was a business-class DSL line with a static IP). The local server still syncs to the pool; I figure since I have an always-on file server, I might as well do my part to lighten the load on the public pool by having my own slave server to serve out time locally.

The issue isn't whether to use the NTP pool or not; the issue is that whatever KDE did when I configured NTP via the GUI didn't work!
