Upgrading mobo and cpu, reinstall linux 18.04?

Mon Dec 02, 2019 11:35 am

I am contemplating upgrading my home plex server from an i3-2120t with an 950gtx gpu to an i5-9400 (not the F) for transcoding and dvr, and eventually a minecraft server. I find that the gpu decoding is hit or miss, and I have lost my low power savings of the 2120t by having a 950gtx on all the time. If I do a mobo/cpu swap, will I need a fresh install of Ubuntu?

Linux is generally very tolerant of motherboard/CPU swaps. The only area where I'd be concerned about potential issues would be if you've installed any binary (3rd party out-of-tree) drivers, e.g. GPU. Aside from that, if you're using the stock kernel from your distro it should generally do a reasonable job of auto-detecting everything the next time it boots and activating the appropriate drivers.

You might need to re-do your network configuration settings since those are probably keyed off of the MAC address of the NIC.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

I've taken a ubuntu 18.04 image from a computer with a nvidia GPU and the (in-distro) proprietary drivers for it and used it on a totally different computer that only had intel video.

Worked without any intervention whatsoever.

Your mileage may vary, but it very likely should be fine.

This really god to know. Gotta love a good linux project. I will probably command line purge all nvidia stuff, shut it down, then move it to where I can swap the guts out.

Now, what to do with a 2120t?

Put it in a mini-ITX mobo and build a robot out of it. Programming the robot's gonna be fun!
