Really new at FreeBSD, although I have used linux, I am running into a
problem with FreeBSD install.
I d/led the mian disk ISO image of FreeBSD 5.2.1 and burned it to a CD. On
a linux machine, I verified the MD5 sum of the CD with "dd if=/dev/cdrom
bs=66???? | md5" command (I forget the block size) but the md5 sum matched
the checksum file on the site. So the disk is good.(?)
When booting off the cd and loading up the stuff, if I do a base minimal
install the packages all go on correctly and I can boot in. But when I do
any type of install requiring X windows (like what I eventually will keep)
and it install the dependencies like perl package I always get a faliure
message as the sysinstall program tries installs the package. It says
"Error Abort Code 1" and when I switch to tty2 (the debug terminal) it says
"Could not locate the package. You can try bz2zip recover to recover the
packages." Then the rest of the dependencies fail. But sometimes on
repeated tries of installing, the perl package will work, and the next few
packages will work, and then another random package will fail. Sure enough
if I keep clicking through, eventually all the packages get installed. I
then am returned to sysinstall where I have to then install KDE, some
programming tools, and other goodies, only to find the same sorts of
problems of having packages not install.
I mounted the CD on a base install of this box, and on my linux box, and can
browse the directory structure and see all the packages. How can I get the
packages to install from the CD (remote FTP would be nice but my 56k
connection is too slow). Also, how hard is it to set up an FreeBSD ftp
server from my linux box?
TIA,
