NAT on NAT

Sat Dec 07, 2002 10:47 pm

Is this possible? I have a friend that is on a NAT at his college. A 10.x.x.x setup, and he's alloted one IP Address which is linked to his MAC. Could he setup a NAT of his own behind it?

Yes, of course. Just go buy one of those nifty DSL/Cable routers and you're set.

Yeah definitely possible, if you go the router way though just make sure you get one that'll clone a MAC address (pretty much all should but you just never know).

Actually my friend (It's yarbo :)) wants to use a Linux box as the router. He has it running RH 7.3. Configuration tips?

He could always put the network adapter to which the IP is linked to, in the linux box. That way there is no need for cloning. In linux there is an utility called iptables - comes with RH 7.0 and up I think - that he should have installed and take a close look at. It handles the NAT stuff.

Was there any particluar linux distro that he wanted to use? If he's not set on a specific one from the get go I would recommend something like Astaro http://www.astaro.com, LRP http://www.linuxrouter.org, or SmoothWall http://www.smoothwall.org. Astaro and Smoothwall have some hard requirements that he'll have to look at but LRP can be run from a floppy yet still get the job done. If he doesn't want to use a firewall specific distro he can use this http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~dranch/LINUX/index-linux.html#ipmasq to help him out. I've been using Astaro myself for the past couple months and haven't had a problem with it. Oh if you decide to look up more information on NAT and linux it'll be more commonly refered to as masquerading.
