Well, I consider Linux an enthusiast platform. As we all know, enthusiasts aren't happy unless something is broken that needs fixing.

I'll echo some others on Gentoo being an excellent way to learn how Linux works. Gentoo has been becoming more user friendly with the past few releases. Also, http://gentoo-wiki.com is a great resource for gentoo.
