Saw a link to this out there:

Think M$ will try to encapsulate Linux functionality into the next Windows Server?

Microsoft already makes quite a bit of UNIX functionality available for Windows, as their "Services for UNIX" add-on:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/sfu/default.asp

As near as I can tell, this product is essentially a UNIX emulation layer for Windows, bundled with a copy of the GNU tools! (In other words, it is Microsoft's answer to Cygwin.)

I find it quite amusing that Microsoft will actually sell you a copy of the GNU C++ compiler! Exposes their whole "Open Source is evil and viral" argument as the FUD it really was, doesn't it? :D

The only reason Microsoft pumped so much money in to SCO is to keep them capable of complaining about the UNIX source code which provides negative press for the Linux operating system, since SCO says it illegally too the source of UNIX in some parts of Linux..

The only other reason is they would be an obvious target of SCO to sue, which would not really result in much more than a lot of wasted money on court costs and lawyers, since SCO does not have much ground to stand on.

Kind of a tangent but Germany has decided to stick with Suse for the software for their workstations/servers. Good for Suse that they are getting support from their home country:

Good for SuSE...

I use SuSE 8.2 Pro and I have to say, it has to be the best mix of performance, features, hardware recognition, and stablity of any distro that I have ever used.
