This is a long shot but I figure I'd ask here.
Long story short, I ditched win8 on my new laptop (as above it's a g580 with: i3proc, HD 4000 graphics) and I've run into an issue where the fn keys don't work to change the screen brightness.
I've attempted all fixes in the following thread (specifically post #15 and #17 and not seen any effects. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1875126&page=2
Any further thoughts on the matter or am I just screwed until a fix comes along later? On the last page someone other than me with the same laptop as posted that the previously mentioned fixes have not been helpful.
