my "new" 12 core opteron server

Thu Mar 12, 2015 8:17 am

I built out my new 12 core server last night from an ASUS KCMA-D8 I found on ebay and a pair of opterons that I found on a shelf at work.

Dunno how long I'll keep it folding, but I wanted to give it a stress test to bake in the thermal compound.

FWIW, I'm getting estimates of ~25000 PPD.

Which specific Opteron chips are those?

Ah, as those are the older Lisbon Opterons you should have some decent options in terms of upgrading CPUs in the future if you choose to. Though nothing is a better upgrade than 'free' :)

This particular PCB rev of the board only works with opteron 4100 procs, and the 4184 is as high as they ever went. Still, the MB only cost me ~$130 on ebay, and the mem was a carry-over from my previous phenom x3 server.
