TRFrankenbot 2015 - any interest?

Sun Sep 20, 2015 11:45 am

Anyone thinking about waking up Frankie? Thought 10 days was lots of lead time but last years thread started earilier.

2014_topic

Looking at the stats today, Frankie has been snoozing since last October.

I'd probably throw a machine or two in for nostalgia's sake. CPU only though; I don't own any GPUs worth folding on.

I'm all in. Good for 12-16 million for the month, depending on the work units I get.

Looks like somebody's been folding about 4k per day for a long time, so Frankie already has a heartbeat. Maybe forgot to switch back after Frankie '14?

My laptop will be up soon. ~4000 points a day from that. My main rig should add a fair bit with the 750 ti in it.

I'm going to download folding now for my main rig and then configure some BIOS settings.

Edit: Windows 10, F@h, my wifi adapter and my 750 ti don't cooperate. My main rig is a no go.

I'm committing my desktop with CPU and GPU clients via UGN. It is getting a bit cool so my place can use a bit more heat. 8)

Edit: what UGN? It is TRFrankenbot! Need to change user name when i get back.

I'm switched over now and my first work units will come in about 8 minutes and 20 minutes after this post, and by breakfast time, I'll have put in about 215K. Go Frankie! 8)

TRFrankenbot is now #5 producer. 8)

439K for today as of Noon. The sooner we can get above 1M points per day, the easier it will be to beat last year's October record, which is 29.5 Million. I'm already 100% switched over, so can't do more unless I build a new box.

Looks like a nice start. I look forward to this. (need to get out more)

30 M for the month of October would be nice. In addition to moving Frankie up 7 positions on the Tech Report page, it would move Frankie up approx 400 positions within all individuals. Currently at 1,553.

Just downloaded the latest Linux CLI client and fired it up. Hopefully I'll have time to spin up another 8-core client in the next few days. Current status of my (so far, just 1 node) Frankenbot farm here.

Alright, I have no idea what the TRFrankenbot is.

No worries, I just clicked the link to last year's thread so I could catch up. Except there's no clarification there. Posts down, someone asks what it is, someone else offers a less than complete answer and then gives two links which still don't answer the question.

What is TRFrankenbot?

It's basically a Folding@home team-within-a-team. Once a year, for the month of October, a bunch of us pool resources and fold under a single user name, TRFrankenbot. IIRC we've used the slogan "Make TRFrankenbot scary for Halloween!" in past years.

2013 thread: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=89358

Within it, the explanation post: viewtopic.php?p=1177596#p1177596

My GPU client keeps crashing, x17, x18, x21 all crashed so many times the client just gave up with "Failed". I may have finished one or 2 GPU WUs so far. My output this month will be minimal at best (and I have a few big long Handbrake jobs coming up that I will be needing CPU power). :-?

Just turned in the first WU. The points projection from my monitoring script was off by a fair bit; have they changed the bonus points calculation? I suppose it could just be the result of normal fluctuation in CPU usage, since this is my primary desktop and I've been using it all afternoon; the effects of other load on the CPU (or lack thereof) is amplified by the way the bonus multiplier works.

Edit: Never mind, it looks like F@h throughput over the course of this WU was all over the map, so yeah the estimate would've been all over the place since it is based on just the time to calculate the most recent step.

We seem to be pushing 700 to 800 K points per day. Looks like I was offline for about 8 hours on Monday, but I'm running again as of now.

And yes, points awarded are not consistent over time. What your workstation earned in a day a year ago will likely not match what it will earn today.

Bear in mind too, that A4 early return bonus is gone. Which means that CPU-only rigs will pull in a lot fewer points this year. GPU is the name of the game and has been for over a year now; and I don't mean just for folding. GPGPU is where it's at for all sorts of parallel processing needs, from graphic rendering in batch to Nvidia's big car project.

Also, the WUs themselves have changed. We went from x15's to x17's, to now X18 work units, and I could swear I saw an x21 someday last week (but would have to double-check on that).

Hah, so there are x21 WUs. What GPU card(s) are you using? It has been more than a year since I've had a GPU work unit fail.

Yes, I realize that PPD of the WUs they hand out changes over time; but my estimates are based on actual time required to compute one step of the WU currently in progress. It was just that my CPU load was fluctuating all over the place (stupid Flash ads!) which was throwing the estimate off, and this error was then being amplified by the bonus calculation.

I see.

Actually, the client (at least in Windows) now is very accurate in its estimates, once you get past one or two steps of a WU. I can pretty much book on it now.

Yeah, I'm still using (essentially) the same homegrown scripts I've been using to manage my F@h activities for the past half decade. I should probably take a closer look at what the current tools provided by Pande do.

I still on the GTX660. It seems to crash on all 3 types all the time. I managed 1 GPU WU over the weekend and it has not been working since.

It may be the latest WHQL driver I am using is not up to snuff, but I really have no time to try troubleshoot this. Or, may be it is telling me I should be getting a 960/970 soon. :o

I have been really pleased with my 970m (I realize this is not the same as a 970). It is doing ~143K ppd.

I have a couple of 980's and they haul ass without a lot of whining or complaining, so I love 'em. The heat is not too bad, but a third card would make the home office about as comfortable as the inside of a pizza oven.

My rendering and folding seem to be compatible. Most unbiased renderers will make use of Nvidia cards, and they seem to be good folding performers, too so I'll stick with Nvidia. Folding sort of "ducks" out of the way when I send render work to the GPUs, and I don't seem to have to do anything special. I like that.

I am still thinking of building a 2P rendering box with 3 GPUs. I have a couple of choices:

1. Put the new box into a spare room, let it run F@H 24/7, then build a local cloud to get rendering work over to it and back. Some rendering hosts will allow a client to run on a remote machine, but others won't. For the less-sophisticated ones, the local cloud would let me run everything "locally" on either box and get me around that problem. Assuming that licensing isn't impacted. Something to figure out when I get closer.

2. Build the new box with 2 GPUs (still need slots and backplane space for other cards, DSP and such), and replace the current workstation in my home office. Then take that old workstation, add a GPU, refloor it in another room, and let both run F@H 24/7.

Either way, I think I can start pushing about 1.2 to 1.5 million points per day and gain a rendering rig and a home theater server at the same time.

Putting out the call for more folders to help Frankie this year. Frankie does not discriminate against producers of any range high or low, but right now the shortfall is about 50% of what we're pulling in, so if we could get a couple of the top-five producers to switch some or all of their farm over, we might still have a chance to make 30 million points by Halloween.

Thanks in advance for whatever you're able to contribute!
