TR Frankenbot 2016: It's Alive!

Sun Sep 11, 2016 12:12 pm

Just an early heads-up to any who might be interested in joining us this year.

If I can keep ship and crew running (still haven't replaced my components), I'm good for up to 5 million points per week; so close to 20 M from me.

Who's with me on this?

Edit: Updated the subject because it's now October!

Provided the current Linux CLI client isn't too f*cked up (has it changed since last year?), I'm probably in for an AMD FX octo-core or two. Production pales compared to the GPU client, but at least it's something.

Frankie isn't fussy, because even his name implies that he is made up of the parts of many. It takes a lot of power for him to gain consciousness each year!

My tiny little mini-ITX gaming PC can kick out more points in two hours than I accumulated with 3 PCs in two years near the start of the project, but I'm loathe to add the heat and noise while I'm still running the air conditioning.

I figure by October 1 AC season will be essentially over for me, and the noise level of the current build isn't too bad under full load (all fans are large diameter and low RPM).

OTOH, of some concern for me is the fact that I normally set my laptop on top of my desktop mid-tower case to charge it and put it within reach of the KVM cables, while still keeping it out of the way when "docked". Optimal use of space is a concern in a cluttered office such as this! With the system running full-bore my makeshift laptop "dock" will probably get a little too warm...

Welcome to team 2630 and Congrats on your first 100k milestone!

http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/ ... =&u=673900

I don't think Fah gives any bonus points for current GPU work units, but it never hurts to have a passkey in case they do in the future or if you decide to crunch some SMP work units.

I hope to soon borrow my cousin's DSL internet to sneakernet a full 200MB driver (with open GL support) and the V7 client to get my 550Ti back in service. Fah no longer supports any version of the V3 console client.

edit - All V3 GPU clients tested, but no experience with the V3 SMP or Linux clients.

Thanks, nice plot too :D

I have a passkey, and thought all workloads were now SMP? Did get tripped up at first with the n-1=7 issue, must've forgotten that somehow, but things seem happy now.

I found it interesting how the h/w differs in folding capability, particularly in how much the new Skylake Xeon E3 stomps on the Sandy Bridge Core i5 in estimated PPD:

i5-2500K ~3k
HD 7750 ~18k 12k
E3-1270v5 ~19k 20k
R9 290X ~97k 121k

Edit: update PPDs; it's barely worth running on the HTPC, that's an order of magnitude :-?

Arrrgh, I got hit with a forced reboot last week and the machine is very temperamental when booting. I am unable to start folding. Will keep trying...

What PPD on average are people getting with their hardware?
My i5-3570K @ 4GHz is doing 9-11k ppd
My GTX660 is doing 57-77k ppd

Is there any way to track the number of points coming from your particular machine while folding for TRFrankenbot?

Review your logs and add up the numbers. In my experience, you won't be more than 1-2% off.

FYI,

i5-3570K@4Ghz yields 8-9K PPD
EVGA 660Ti w/ normal boost yields ~70-90K PPD

The points depend on the type of WUs and cores.

As a rule of thumb, for GPU folding. Shading prowess and SP performance matters far more then memory bandwidth and fill-rate. Nvidia chips are better on average at folding, but the gap closes with most recent generation of GPUs from both camps.

Oh, hey...reminder to all:

The proper spelling for Frankie is as follows:

TRFrankenbot

...and I think it may be case-sensitive too. Double-check, because if you get it wrong then your points won't go to OUR Frankie. :(

It is not case-sensitive, but what really matters is the keypass.

Okay, maybe you're right about it not being case-sensitive, but one can't misspell it and expect points to go to the right place. For example, there are at least two "Frankie" names and two variants of "Frankenbot" attatched to the TechReport team. None of those is the TRFrankenbot that we're working on right now.

So to be clear for newbies, one has to get three things correct for your points to go to "our Frankie". The team number which is 2630, Frankie's proper name "TRFrankenbot" (no quotes), and the passcode which nobody should publish here but plenty of people will PM to you upon request.

Sorry to be picky on this one, but it's probably best to be clear about it here at the beginning of October, yes?

Just looking at GPU charts again and it looks like Pascal-era stuff are absolute monsters at folding due to their insane SP throughput. Even the lowly 1060 outpaces anything in its price range and manages to keep up with a 980.

If you want to setup a killer folding farm. 1060s seemed to be a solid choice.

Oh why did you have to make me look at that?

Seriously, GTX 1080 is 3x the R9 290X, the new TITAN X is 5x ...

Edit: This brings home that I'm running on a 3 y.o. GPU, and that AMD hasn't offered me anything compelling since I bought it, and that NVIDIA hasn't offered anything affordable since then either -- for a rather silly value of "affordable" too! :x

R9 Fury X yes though 5 NVIDIA cards beat it, RX 480 kinda but it's a lesser card in games, RX 470 not so particularly when you factor in that some of the R9 290X results in that Google docs list must be detuned or at least in non-über mode.

So I am having a problem with my CPU slot.  It worked yesterday but last night and today I am getting the following error:
21:35:46:WU00:FS00:Connecting to 171.67.108.45:8080
21:35:47:WARNING:WU00:FS00:Failed to get assignment from '171.67.108.45:8080': Empty work server assignment
21:35:47:WU00:FS00:Connecting to 171.64.65.35:80
21:35:47:WARNING:WU00:FS00:Failed to get assignment from '171.64.65.35:80': Empty work server assignment

I have tried restarting, and removed and readded the CPU slot.  Still same error.  My GPU slot is folding fine.

Anyone know how to fix this error?  Windows 10, 7.4.4 client.
