Well good luck. I try to maintain only the most current, best performing hardware within my price range. I find that the production of points is on an order of magnitude more, while the time spent is on an order of magnitude less. The former is due to the exponential improvement in throughput from generation to generation of hardware, while the latter is due to the fact that I have to concurrently build and run fewer systems to get that order of magnitude more performance, so I end up saving a lot of time.

Trying to keep Windows XP, 7, or 8.x going at this point would be frustrating for me, and that wouldn't be fun. Now that's not a dis on anybody who wants to do that, or people who can't afford to upgrade to the latest hardware or OS. We need all folders! But it just wouldn't be a good use of time for me.

Have to go out of town in the morning, and the good machine crashed hard yesterday for unknown reasons so I don't want to risk letting it run unattended for 5 days. Will be back on Friday, though.

Oofta, lost almost a million PPD yesterday (Topinio?). So close to the finish line folks, finish strong!

Also, for anyone using AMD cards to fold. I'd recommend updating to the new 17.10.2 and enabling the new "compute" mode. Obviously your PPD varies a bit, but my PPD increased 5-7% just by enabling compute mode.

The next update of stats should move us beyond the mark set last year of 51.6 million!

I'm back, just fired up the engines again.

Nice to see we're on 52.3M too, nicely done all.

I tried installing 17.10.2 before donig so, was a fail, unfortunately

You got that message when updating to 17.10.2, or did you uninstall Radeon Settings completely before installing 17.10.2?

Strange. I checked my folding client today and it's hovering around 400k-410k PPD. My rig is usually good for 300k PPD at best....

Message is after reboot, on trying and failing to open Radeon Settings. Uninstalled 17.10.1 first, via Control Panel->Uninstall a program->AMD Software->(Right click) Change->Uninstall (I didn't select Clean Uninstall), rebooted to generic video driver, installed 17.10.2, rebooted.

Then, when I had this issue (immediately on reboot, wait for disk light to go out, log in, wait for everything to load, right click desktop to get to Radeon Settings and check/tweak stuff), I uninstalled 17.10.2 , via Control Panel->Uninstall a program->AMD Software->(Right click) Uninstall, rebooted to generic video driver, installed 17.10.2 again, rebooted, waited for disk light to go out, logged in, waited for everything to load, right clicked my desktop to get to Radeon Settings and check/tweak stuff and had the same thing.

Then went back to 17.10.1 via the same tedious process, all is happy, fired up the F@H client. I can work on the video driver issue after the WUs

When I woke up Saturday, I noticed that my folding rig had crashed too. I booted it and found the client had been paused. Yuck, I hate that. Restarted and running fine so far.

I still wish there were an automated way to restart folding after X hours. In almost every case, I'm just doing some activity for a period of time that could benefit from peace and quiet, and I could set the timer to 4 or 8 and I would never have to remember to re-engage the warp drive.

Would be nice. Or if there was something in between "While I'm working" and "Only when idle", where it ran full steam ahead while I'm not doing much but paused when the CPU or GPU hit a (ideally user-definable) usage level from other applications.

Ah, try just updating to 17.10.2. That's what I did, no issues with that.

Not sure you understand. We want to shut down folding for (usually) some reason OTHER than response time hit. Like attending a meeting in that room without people on the call saying, "who's driving outside with the top down?" Or reading. Or reducing the heat while the sun is coming in the window. I want to be able to hit a "pause for X minutes" button just to quiet down the fans, stop generating heat for a little while, or whatever. And then, X minutes later, it can ramp up again, all by itself. I'll probably be somewhere else.

Ah, my mistake.

So we've pushed Frankie to 62.4 million points, and the night ain't over yet. I have about another 70,000 points coming in right in that last hour of October. Hopefully, anyhow.

I'll switch back to the engine room of the USS Firehorse right about then and we'll be heading to look for Pern. With luck, we'll make it to the halfway point just before Christmas, at which we'll stop for a warp nacelle refit.

Another October comes to a close for Frankie. Thanks everyone. Special thanks to the new participants and those who answered their questions!
