Two Graphics Cards NOT in Sli RE Folding

Wed Jan 30, 2019 10:54 pm

SETUP Lenovo Y900 RE i7 6700K with an SLI ready mobo 16GB ram 512 SSD 4TB HD 600W PSU Win 10 Pro X64

I am currently running an RTX 2070 as my gaming graphics card and it folds @ 1 Mill PPD.
I have a second slot open for another card in my board but I do not want to run SLI.

My goal is to populate that second slot with a graphics card that will FOLD 24/7 . Does it matter what card is in that slot? Will a GTX1080 or other pascal card play "ok" with the Turing card in the primary slot?

or

Do I have to buy another Turing card for this?

Will my Win 10 Pro operating system and the Folding @ Home Client automatically see the second card if I simply Slot it into that PCI X 16 slot and will this just work or will I have to do any further setup?
Finally, will my i7 6700k oc'd to 4.4ghz 16gb ram have enough horsepower to fully max out the folding PPD while both cards are running at the same time? (RTX 2070 1 mill ppd GTX 1080 800 PPD for example).. I have 4 CPU cores also dedicated to folding.

I can install the potential card into my backup Dell XPS 8300 it 2400 8GB but than the electric bill would be higher than the above (rite?).

Generally speaking, SLI/Crossfire is not used in folding or other distributed compute projects at all. The reason is that the GPUs don't interact with each other at all. GPU 1 is off doing one workload, while GPU 2 is doing a completely different workload (or at a minimum, a different work unit in the same general project).

I don't fold or do other distributed-compute projects myself, but I know people who not only use different GPUs in a single box, but will mix-n-match Nvidia and AMD GPUs for different workloads. That can take some software setup and driver management, but it's certainly possible.
4770K @ 4.7 GHz; 32GB DDR3-2133; Officially RX-560... that's right AMD you shills!; 512GB 840 Pro (2x); Fractal Define XL-R2; NZXT Kraken-X60

I did not meant to imply that I would combine both GPUs to do a single work project. Only that if I install a GTX 10?? alongside my RTX 2070 will Win 10 Pro and the Folding Client recognize it and than allow me to dedicate a slot to the second card which will be used exclusively to fold 24/7?

From what I remember you just have to select the other card in the folding client and you're done.

https://www.overclock.net/forum/366-fol ... -gpus.html

You might also want to experiment with having the CPU slot stopped, I've found on a couple of different systems that doing this increased the system's total PPD, I guess by giving the GPU driver more CPU time and higher CPU clocks, the gain on the GPU was more than the loss from the CPU (the systems were Skylake Xeon E3-1270 v5 w/ 32 GB + Radeon RX Vega 56 8 GB, and Piledriver FX-8370 w/ 20 GB + GeForce GT 720 1 GB).

I have used that reduction in CPU slots suggestion with success in the past. Thanks for the reminder.
My focus is on what will happen if I install a GTX alongside my RTX Pascal alongside Turing.. Is this an issue? AGAIN, not to run in sli but for a 24/7 folder

RTX 2070 dual duty, gaming when not folding but utilized 24/7

GTX 1080 or 1070ti other slot 24/7 folding only NOT connected with sli bridge

Will this work?

It should work fine, although you may need to connect one of the second card outputs to one of the inputs on your monitor.

I have two cards in my computer, it folds with one and not the other.
When I first installed the fah app, when opening advance control (right click in systray) it showed 3 folding slots in use, each with their own slot ID. The 3 slots were 1 for the cpu, and 1 for each card (it gives the name of the card such as 1030).
I then clicked on Configure and (after entering the team number 2630, my user name, etc.) then went to the tab called Slots. I removed the slots that I did not want to have folding; for me it was the CPU as it is too old/slow and the GPU slot that I didn't want to fold.
Let me know if this works for you!
Keep folding!

I am pleased to reply that YES running a Turing And Pascal card side by side in the same rig does, with minor tweeks work perfectly.

My concern was over how the drivers and F@H client would work and if the second (card would fold at full capacity).

SO here was my experience.

RTX 2070 already installed and folding @ about 900k PPD
installed GTX 1070 in NON Sli and add removed the Folding @ Home client HAD TO REMOVE DATA TOO as the first attempt did not pick up the second card).

After reinstalling the F@H Client Fresh ( including removing all previous data) the client picked up the second card rite away, created a second folding slot and now both cards are cranking away for a total of 1.4 to 1.5 Mill PPD. Now showing 900K PPD RTX 2070 600K PPD GTX 1070 I have them dedicated to Alzheimers as this has been my TEAM concentration for 10 years having lost my mother to that dreadful disease.

We (ValueTechnology) are Folding Billionaires.. It is incredible how far GPU Folding has come as only 2 years ago I had to run 4 towers, each with gtx 970 to get close to 1 mill PPD.. Now I can defeat that with one Tower, two cards and reduce my electric bill considerably. FIND THE CURE! This disease is horrible. I hope I will live to see the day when a cure is found.
