TRFrankenbot for COVID-19

Sat Mar 14, 2020 10:18 am

Hi everyone. I suspected this may materialize eventually, but F@H has released COVID-19 projects. I think this is as good of a time as any to wake up frankie!

If you're new to F@H, have a look at this thread. To have your points count toward TRFrankenbot, you'll need the passkey. Simply post that you need the passphrase in this thread and someone will PM it to you ASAP.

Clicking around in the active project page, it looks like the 117xx projects are Corona virus related.

I've just started folding again after building a new workstation. I was shocked to see how few people still are. At last check, Tech Report only had 23 people? It used to be hundreds back in the day.
I wish I had gone to med school.

Glad to have you!

It's been naturally on decline for some years. Of course the state of TR hasn't helped much, but we don't have to discuss that here. What's changed a lot is the computational power of modern hardware though. Orders of magnitue. Nowadays, a $300 GPU gets you 1M PPD.

I noticed the team was in a downward trend on the Extreme stat site. Today, we're back on an upward trend, even though we are now a much smaller team. We've added a few people this past week. It was down to 19 at one time.

Granted, it's been some years since I've folded seriously. I had a little folding farm from 2003-2007 that I was very proud of. I remember it taking days to finish a work unit on a single core CPU. With my current machine, it takes a few hours at the longest. Of course, with a 16-core CPU, the hardware is a bit more advanced now than back in those days. I'd have loved to have had my current rig back then.

I'm slicing and dicing through COVID-19 work units pretty fast. And they are big points, too. Good times.
I wish I had gone to med school.

I'd like to get back in the fight. I participated in F@H some years ago for disease/protein research.
Also if you are an unRAID user their administration just posted information how to utilize the software (BOINC or F@H) with unRAID for COVID-19 research.
I'll see if I can add that to my NAS system.
Stay well!

PS-I've installed F@H on my primary and backup NAS's. I'll add to TRFrankenbot if I receive the passkey. Thanks

I'm having some problems getting work units. It sometimes takes over an hour to receive a new unit. Not sure what's up with that.

Yeah, I noticed a delay as well last night as I was installing F@H. My WebUI was in a ready status for some time before the projects loaded. After selecting "Any disease" as per the instructions I have three projects running now managed from Temple University. One is for COVID-19 protease-potential drug target and the other two are for molecular simulation cancer research. Thank you for the PM DPete, I'll be folding these for TRFrankenbot.

Yeah, I've sat for 5 hours twice already waiting for a WU.
I guess that means there's an overabundance of people folding. I know Nvidia and Tomshardware have announced the F@H efforts.

Ah, people saw that COVID-19 workunits are going out and everyone is relighting their folding machines. That makes sense. My CPU was idle for about an hour. I just got a WU for it a moment ago. Only 220 points, though.

It'll be a good stress test for my new Define 7 chassis once I get the new PSU for it and do a system transplant.

Well it seems the folding servers are working well - NOT! Last 2 days I barely got any units, my 2 machines (used as room heaters in the winter - double useful!) are just waiting, waiting, waiting. They need to fix this quick or I'll be using other software soon.

My GPU hasn't been able to get a work unit since noon yesterday. At least the stats server seems to be working this morning, so maybe F@H has fixed some of the network problems they were having yesterday.

Vega 64 seems to be running cooler since it has more dedicated airspace since PSU is isolated from it

Spending four or five minutes on the "Performance" tab of your Radeon software to set a custom fan curve on your Vega64 will definitely keep it cooler... if you can stand the noise. I haven't re-tweaked mine since the new version of the Radeon software came out, but my first approximation is to set P1 through P5 at 35, 50, 60, 70 and 75 °C to push the fan to 11, 25, 40, 65 and 100 % output. The current version does properly smoothly slope the fan speed in between the points that you set, rather than the annoying stair-step behavior that I experienced the last time that I had my Vega64 folding. It's interesting that applying even this slight additional cooling for the GPU causes it to automatically boost a few percent faster.

I have been undervolting my unit between 800-1050mv with power limit set to 50% and fan profile going from 25-75% utilization. Folding only pushes the GPU @60-65C with reference cooler running at 2600-3000RPM. You can certainly hear the fan but it is not obnoxiously loud. It manages to keep a stable 1600-1620Mhz.

Vega64 knocks out one of those 70k+ point CoViD units in under two hours when it's not idly waiting for a new assignment. These work units are running the newer OPENMM_22 core that is supposed to be compatible with RDNA GPUs. I might see what it takes to get folding going on my second PC.

The biggest WUs I have gotten have been 38k for the video card. Using a 1660 Super. I want a 70k WU!

At this point, I'm lucky to get WUs at all. My CPU is sitting idle yet again.

RDNA architecture isn't really that suited for FP32/FP64 GPGPU stuff. There's a reason why AMD RTG is going to retain GCN branch for their GPGPU customers.

It is crazy that there's not enough WUs to go around. It is usually the other way around with distributed computing projects. There's plenty of volunteering going on.
