We're not saying we don't like your smug look - exactly. You have good reason to be smug, drfish. We just want to wipe it off your face 8) and be smug ourselves.

Having been run over by arpstorm in the last couple of days like I was Wile E. Coyote being flattened by an asphalt paver driven by the Roadrunner, I can't say I'm rooting for you to beat drfish, exactly.

I'm not really bitter, but my wounds still sting a bit. Ouch.

Aye laddy. I suppose that we should have pulled alongside and shared a toast of some Andorian Brandy before returning to the hunt. Sorry to be so rude :(

Today was a good day to Fold too. arpstorm has pulled ahead of noble Leor and the generous idchafee in our average daily output, at least for a little while. No doubt we are experience quantum fluctuations in subspace that are perturbating our relative positions in the Top 20 Producers list in a random statistical matter.

Fold on!

Perturbations and random statistical manner matters aside , I just wish my Intel machines wouldn't keep getting Tinkers, since they are horrible at them.

And, though I should probably start a new thread about this, one thing I seem to have discovered is that my Barton machine's overclocking causes problems in Tinkers if I don't keep it below a certain level. I'm presently attributing that to my mixing memory brands in it, something that I'm not inclined to end too soon since it's an obsolete platform.

I've never run into any other software, including memtest86 and prime95, that gave errors on it, except (perhaps) my video card also seemed to have problems in one game (which I found an invaluable fix for: clockgen lets me lower the speed to play the game and restore it after the game is over), but Tinkers seem to decide to throw an exception every once in a while. I can recover them by hard resetting and lowering the overclock speed, but so far I've not had any similar problems on Gromacs core WUs.

If not for that and some submitted-but-disappeared WUs, I'd have held you off at least a little while longer.

FPU

Fri Apr 01, 2005 1:49 am

One thing we know is that each of these cores runs a Folding simulation. They are floating point intense but not at all written in a threaded manner. Each core probably hammers away at your FPU with different intensity. Given you've overclocked your machine, the FPU may be overheating and locking up.

Just shooting into the darkness here. But if this is right, then perhaps it would be worse in hyperthreaded systems runing two FAH clients. The system has only has one FPU to share among both CPUs, and that would really hammer the FPU.

Thoughts?

Eh. We lost the use of the lab machines recently. We used them as long as we could. Doggone it.

But one of my buddies promised to add five machines at his house to the Folding effort. We're not giving up yet 8)

5 machines is a good start. Now get out there and recruit some more PCs to the effort. Go sweet talk some sorority sisters into doing some research. It could be rewarding.

Checking in a year later!

Tue Mar 28, 2006 12:38 am

Arpstorm has made its way to position 25 at last. My spring class at the U just started and perhaps we can get more Folders to join in.

arpstorm is still Folding

Tue May 23, 2006 12:15 am

All righty then. It's been a year and we've lost momentum.

The place where I do consulting has 10 shiny new Dell PCs and already 1/2 of them are Folding for arpstorm. Our man in Portland is also getting more Folding boxes. Life is good.

Finally we are back in the top 20 list!

Ownage!

and we're now in slot 26

Sorry FrankenBot

Reality Check

Thu May 25, 2006 2:54 am

Hail Noble Leor!

Thanks for the reply. What is with the Darth Leor thing? Don't you realize that Darth Vader died? Yeah they burned him on a funeral pyre, the funeral ceremony for all Master Jedi.

Nobody told you? Damn, who can you depend on when even your fellow Folders won't tell you the truth?

Ya, you and Dr. Fish are certainly most Faithful of Folders. Right now I'm hard pressed to keep the arpstorm team in the top 20 list. Recruiting Folders ain't easy 'cuz so many of my pals run Windows boxes and are afraid as hell of the security implications of Folding.

Well, there should be always a couple of Darth's, so he's just replacing what was lost. :)

It's hard to convince them, but this makes no sense. Folding has less security implications than them visiting pr0n sites and clicking yes on everything. 8)

well it turns out that the white whale was a force for good in the galaxy, and slaying him was an inherently evil act.

after getting a taste of evil i was hooked so when the opportunity to destry a bunch of young padawan gerbils came along, i took it, annihilating their entire nation.

i fear i am past redemption at this point, and the only person barely holding me back from conquering the entire team is the unexpected surge from mysterious master juggernaut.

he'll get his though, you ALL WILL!!! MUAHAHAHA!!

Aye lad, I know what ye mean. Security is about perception and fear of the unknown. Some dude on the street can say "I heard Folding may open up ports for worms to get into your system" and people will believe that opinion over 100 others who know for a fact its wrong.

Oh I just had to ask didn't I? Walked right into that one did I.

Well there's only one thing to do. Next week I am going to bring the other 5 Fedora Core 5 boxes online in our lab and get them bad boys Folding as well.

The dark side will be met with defeat again. My money's on noble TheJuggernaut! Hahahahaaaaaaaa 8) I have already put in an order for some Romulan Ale to celebrate TheJuggernaut reaching 4,000,000 points.

Oh my, such pent-up hostility, so much pain and anger. Did you have a bad childhood? C'mon Leor, chill out man  Repeat after me .... Oommmmmmmm ... Ommmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmm.

There you go, it is all going to be better now.

So tell me, how are we going to get recruits to Fold? I just had a class of 34 students and nobody gave a tinkers damn about the project! Students these days!

So here it is two years and then some later. The landscape has evolved. It now requires 6000 points/day just to get into the top 20 producers list! Leor is still working away and holding at around 20,000 or so points/day. arpstorm, powered by a Mac Pro and a Vista box with dual 9600GT cards and other friends is doing about 10,000 points/day.

Good luck to us all!

arpstorm has broken the 11,000 points/day barrier today. The team is spread between Vancouver BC and Portland Oregon. My own contribution consists of SMP-based Folding on a PS3 and a Mac Pro, plus a dual-GPU Vista box. I've got an nVidia 8800GT on hand, which I'll install shortly to upgrade that Vista box to 3 GPUs. If that is a stable configuration I'll try installing the SMP Windows client on it too. I'm depending on the generous cooling of my Antec 900 case and the Zalman fan on the Q9300 CPU, and assume that the 750-watt power supply will be ample wattage. I'll be monitoring temperatures with CPUID Hardware Monitor.

BTW I am delighted to see segfault7 got spanked by UnitedGerbilNation at along last. What an upstart! But I'm still waiting to see what Noble Leor does about all this. Sitting at position 6 of 20 cannot sit well with him.
