Did you know a black guy with curly red hair? We called him Red but I think his real name was Kelvin, maybe Kelvin Scruggs... I know it's a shot in the dark..

Funny you mention that. For a while we called Red "Knappy Head". He used relaxer to straighten his hair, but used too much and it fell out in chunks. Ah, sigh... Those were the days...

You guys are doing OK without me so far? I'm peaking in the 6k PPD range. I could get it higher if I ran SMP on my core 2 laptops... not sure how to do that though cause the systems won't let ne install SMP... takes too many privilegs...

You've got my Q9300 till May 24. My server I'll convert after it finishes its WU unless i swap the proc, in which case its SMP would be sorta useless as it doesnt need a dual core in it and i may go down to a celeron and sell the dualie in it

I do occasionally play games, but my chip is at 3.2 ghz so, whatever works.

Why is it that the windows SMP client runs 5 degrees cooler than running two VMwares?

I would think the VMwares would run cooler since overall utilization is a little lower than when the SMP client runs in Windows. Was your house the same temperature when you compared readings? Maybe ambient temp is affecting result?

My house has been getting up to about 78 to 80F during the day. This was not helping my poor over OC'd Q6600 during the folding ramp-up this week. I was getting mid 60s temps, even saw 70 a time or two :o

Amazingly it was stable the whole time. No crashes at all folding 24/7. I have saved the BIOS settings as I don't think I'd ever be able to get them tweaked as perfect again. I wish I could say it was skillz that got my system stable at 3.6, but I know it was more luck than anything :)

Yea, I went a week returning maybe 1/4 of my potential WUs. Sorta nailed my coffin shut there.

But if anything, Ambient temps have gone UP here. So it's weird that its cooler now.

Just put UnitedGerbilNation as the Username and Team 2630 of course.

I will add your name to the Census. :D

What is UnitedGerbilNation?

Fri Jul 25, 2008 7:23 am

Hi everyone

I have been a long time reader of TR and have been facinated by the entire distributed computing effort and UGN's participation in this effort since I first read about it. I finally decided to get off the bench and take part (rather late than never I suppose), so about a week ago I decided to have a look at the fah GPU2 client to see just how productive a GPU could be and what impact running the GPU2 client would have on the rest of my pc usage. Surprisingly it has had very little effect at all to normal pc usage and my 8800GT has been contributing about 3500ppd to the UGN effort for the last week. My pc is online virtually 24/7 I will leave it folding in UGN's name. I will hopefully be adding my server, once it has been rebuilt, to the effort in the near future

I haven't been in a place where it made sense for me to fold for the UGN for quite some time, but I'm happy to report that I just got a new opportunity to add a decent chunk of power to the mob.

I got two dual opteron workstations runnin 2 instances each of the standard linux client (can't do 64 bit I'm afraid, I tried it and it didn't work), and one dual opty running the smp client with both cpus chuggin away.. for a total of somewhere around 12ghz of good 'ole fashioned K8 power. Hope it helps!
