Is it even really worth it to fold with single core anymore?

Thu Nov 01, 2007 8:55 pm

To fold with my 2.6 Celeron im using 89 KW/h which at my power rate is costing me $6.95 per month

My 2.2 P4m in my Dell laptop uses 45 KW/h costing me $3.47 per month

My Q6600 overclocked to 3.0 uses 134 KW/h costing $10.43 per month

And my PS3 uses 148 KW/h per month costing $11.59

According to FahMon my Q6600 gets 2730 PPD, the PS3 gets about 900 PPD (estimated), the P4m gets 130 PPD and the Celeron 78 PPD

So my Q6600 is getting me a little more than 8100 points per dollar
The PS3 gets me 2407 points per dollar
P4m = 1161 points per dollar
and finally, the Celeron only 347 points per dollar spent

So obviously the money (no pun intended) at least from my judging, is in SMP and the more cores the better

So you're trying to justify replacing the Celeron with Penryn?

Actually that is my plan, Im going to keep the B3 Q6600 Ive got now and turn it back down to stock speed, or something cooler at least, and put it in my small case, and get either G0 Q6600 or something 45nm (depending on how much they cost) to put on my Gigabyte board and see how far I can overclock it.

If you care more about points, then no, SMP all the way. If you care about the science, then I believe there are still some WUs that are processed by single core processors only.
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

using your math and figures and from looking at newegg... a q660 and G33MB will run $400. Just ignore that you will probably need $80-$120 worth of ram to get 3.0ghz.

setting up and equation and using your numbers

$10.43 (8100) *m= 1161(3.47*m + 400)

m=5.7722

In other words running the p4m or buying the q6600, in 5.7722 months you would have the same points if you could just buy the points with the initial investment at the p4m rate of 1161pts/$

$400+10.43*5.7722 = $460.20 dollars out.

in reality it would take 400/3.47 +5.77 months to get the points out of the p4m which is 121 months, and after 5.77 months you could live with the knowledge that you would have more points and a q6600 if you had ponied up the money.

Single cores still make points, but probably too few too slow.

Sell these two. Buy another Q6600 rig. Or you could go Q9450 when it comes out for a potentially better overclocking experience & SSE4.

Also, remember that if you run the Q6600 at stock speeds, it's fine. Once you start overclocking, however, the stock HSF isn't up to par. Of course, I'm sure you knew that because you have a Q6600 already.

I still fold on a PIII.

If all it does is fold, then no.

But if you have a perfectly running computer that does plenty of other things why not fold on it?

Well the problem with that is I have this disease that causes me to be unable to get rid of any electronics device no matter how inefficient or useless.

But when AGP x1950's decide to stop costing nearly $200 STILL, Ill use it as a GPU system

Good thinking! The 1950 should yield you ~600 PPD, if I'm not mistaken.
