SMP Client on Core i7

Sat Dec 20, 2008 10:24 am

I am considering putting F@H SMP on the i7 of this box very soon, any advice on its installation and use? I already downloaded and installed the GPU one from Nvida last night that is running right now on the GPU. If I get the i7 folding I will have the GTX 280 SSC, i7 and PS3 all folding for the team.

Go for it. The SMP client will probably get do very well on the i7. I get over 4,000ppd on my Q9450. My GTX280 does over 8,000.

You must have dropped some serious cash on your build :o

Under Linux, remember to set "-smp 8" to get all 8 hyper-threads running. That gives about 7k ppd on my core i7 920.

He's running Vista 64. He can't boot linux as he wouldn't be able to run the GPU client then...

Unless you know some way to run linux virtually AND it hit all 8 cores? I use VMWare and it's only good for two cores per virtual environment.

Boot Linux and go for the GPU folding under Wine if seriously hardcore. Of course that means all you are doing is folding and not gaming but this is all about the folding power, right? :-)

Multiple VMs?

Hyper-V can do it but that's not really an option for Vista (Server 2008 though...)

the post I was responding to was about how to run 8 cores on one SMP client...

Do they have a good GUI client for FAH SMP? I keep seeing one for the command line only, while I have no issue with this I would prefer to be able to manage them from my tray like I do the Nvidia GUI one for the GTX 280 card. I like the quick access to turn them on or off when I want the power back for my own uses, however I suppose I could just write a batch file to quickly turn it on or off...

Go for it! The i7 is an amazing folding engine.

I borrowed a SuperMicro X8DTN+ with two Core i7's and 12 GB of RAM a few weeks ago. I couldn't touch the HDD, so I ran NotFred's folding CD with a 4 GB USB thumb-drive. I think the rig generated over 12k PPD!

No. I just install it as a service and keep a handy link to the services management console on the desktop. It is a bit of a pain, but not so bad. I used to have a couple of batch files that I used under XP, but I ran into trouble using them with UAC for some reason and didn't bother to rework them for my new system with Vista.

I run mine from the console dos window in the task bar which can be shutdown with a simple Ctrl+C. And I launch the client with a shortcut icon in the quick launch tray. Just be sure to add the -smp flag to your shortcut properties.

Thanks for adding your high end hardware to the team TR crunching effort.

That's just awesome adivce. Folding under windows? Run the CPU client in a VM. Folding under Linux? Run the GPU client in Wine.

*gasp* I posted in the DC forum... :o

Thanks for the advice on the shortcut, works like a charm.

I get over 4,000ppd on my Q9450

not to thread hijack, but what? my 9450 @ 3.2 ghz, folding with a 4870 gets me about 1.5k ppd at best.

Last I checked you are not running the SMP client, no?

I switched to SMP, took your advice. Obviously I shouldn't get all 4k because mines less agressivly OC'ed and i'm running a 4870, but I would think it'd still get around 2.5k.

Hmm... david is doing the VMware with Linux thing, so he should get more points.

I'm only running one SMP cllient in VMware now, and one GPU2 client. The SMP clients are really ticking me off lately. Just don't feel like fooling with them.

Actually 1500ppd with 4870 GPU2 client and WinSMP does seem kind of low. What are the WU projects that they are working? Do you have something else chewing CPU (like a CPU hogging Flash plugin on a Firefox tab)?

my sidebar takes an average of 1-2 cpu usage, but nothing much else. in total FAH gets about 80%. ATM my main pc is broken (videocard fried, in the RMA process now) so I can't tell you an WU names. One thing that might cause it, is that 3 cores generally get around 20-25% each, yet core 3 gets 8-16%. Before the New ATI Dll's and my overclock I was getting about 800 ppd.

Even 1 instance of WinSMP should do 1000+ ppd. So totalling the SMP and GPU2 clients you should definitely be more than 1500. Something does not seem quite right here.

well i'm only counting the cpu. my 4870 gets about 3k a day, so i'm doing in total 4.5k. however, it does seem low, any ideas?

My Q9450 3.2Ghz running 2x VMware Linux SMP guests (one guest per pair of cores) is good for around 5500-5800PPD + the GPU points. The Linux SMP is much more efficient than the Win SMP client and it's been along while since I've run the WinSMP client, but your Q9450 should be good for at least 2/3 of the points: 3500-4000PPD

Check your cpu utilization by core in Task manager and try nailing the process affinities to specific CPU cores. Also, deactivate the GPU client to see if you are getting competition from it.
