Notfred's - Not detecting x86-64 CPU

Tue Dec 30, 2008 10:42 am

I just upgraded my Dell Vostro laptop to a Intel T9300 2.5ghz CPU.

I tried to load the cd iso in vmware but on SMP startup, I get "No x86-64 cpu found only i686.

I know this CPu has x64 and virtulization support.I am running Vista x64 base O/S. VMware Server 2.0

Any Suggestions?

VT enabled in BIOS? You may also need to add a line in the .vmx file to tell VMware to use VT as well. It is referenced somewhere in this forum, use the search. ;)
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

Some VM software versions (i.e. basic / desktop) don't support 64-bit guest OS's. A 32-bit guest should work.

Yes, with Intel CPUs I believe hardware virtualization support must be enabled in the BIOS for 64-bit guests to work.

32-bit guest OS is a non-starter in this case, since his goal is to run the Linux SMP folding client (which requires a 64-bit OS).

(As an aside, VMware Server is popular for hosting folding, because it A) is free; B) supports 64-bit guests even on 32-bit host OSes; and C) supports SMP.)
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Actually VMware Workstation (I can't confirm Player since I don't use it myself, but I see no reason why not) should work also, you just need to make sure you have the proper CPU support. I am running the Linux SMP stuff on my S939 X2 using VMware Workstation, on 32-bit XP no less. On Intel CPUs, VT must be supported even if you have a 64-bit host OS (that auto implies your CPU supports 64-bit of course).

Bingo ....

A little bit of "Google" informed me that all dell laptops come with VT disabled by default.

It was hidden in the "POST Behavior" section of the BIOS.

Got it turned on and SMP is up and running ....

Many Thanks

Lenovo's also have it disabled by default, in case anyone else wonders. An easy switch in the BIOS enables it.

Yup, but Workstation isn't free (at least, it wasn't last time I checked).

I do the exact same thing here, on an S939 X2 4200. AFAIK the S939 X2s don't even have the AMD virtualization extensions; I'm not sure what's different about AMD CPUs that makes supporting 64-bit guests easier, someone with knowledge of virtualization internals would need to answer that.

My HP workstation also came with VT disabled in the BIOS.
