I have returned.

Mon May 18, 2009 10:45 pm

Back around 2004-2005 I used to be in the top 20 PPD on the team, you know, when 2k PPD from just CPU's was impressive. But all my college friends either got new computers/laptops so I was left with like maybe 200-400 ppd. Then I joined the army after I graduated and got shipped to korea for 2 years and then iraq 3 months after I left Korea. Upon my return, I built me an entirely too complex of a machine (which ended up being a monster folder).

The Case Components:
Cosmos S Case
Antec Signature 850
Scythe Kaze Master Fan Controller
Scythe S-Flex G 120mm Fans x5
Scythe Kama Flex 120mm Fans x5

The Hardware:
Intel Core i7 920
Super Talent DDR3 1333 Samsung HCH9 2GB x6
DFI LanpartyUT X58
eVGA GTX280
xfx 9800GT x2
Omega Claro Halo Sound Card
Western Digital VelociRaptor 300
LG BD+DVDRW Drive

First Loop; CPU Cooling:
Fesser 360 Radiator (S-Flex Fans)
Watercool Heatkiller 3.0 Waterblock
XSPC Res Top
Primochill 7/16" UV Blue Tubing
Swiftech MCP355 Pump on UN Design holder
Bitspower Compression and Fatboy Fittings

Second Loop; GPU/Chipset Cooling:
XSPC RX240 Radiator (Kama Flex)
Swiftech MCW60 R2 with full cover sink on GTX280
Watercool G92 Waterblocks x2 on 9800GT's
Watercool Parallel Bridge
Enzotech Chipset Waterblock
Primochill 7/16" UV Red Tubing
EK Top V2
EK Res 150
Swiftech MCP355 Pump on UN Design holder
Bitspower Compression and Fatboy Fittings

This is what it currently gets:
Core i7 920 (currently at 3.4ish, too lazy to push farther) Dual SMP clients @ ~2350 PPD each
GTX280 @ ~8k PPD
9600GSO 96sp @ 0 PPD :(
9600GSO 96sp @ 0 PPD :(

I didn't know the GSO's wouldn't work with the GTX280 so I had to order some GTX275's, which the GSO's will get put in my old Xeon 3060 rig that's currently in storage and replace the X1900XTX. The i7 monster when finalized will be fairly close to 30k PPD alone.

Nice. Good to have you on the team! I have a similar rig running an i7 920, GTX 280, and GTX295. I get about 25k PPD with a good WU mix. If I could score another GTX295 deal I might consider getting it, then I'd hit 30k easily. Anyway, good to have you on the team, 2630 I hope, and even better if it's for UGN. 8)

Welcome back. As you discovered, you need to match video cards with the same shader counts.

I finally got the 275's installed and I'm now sitting at an estimated ~29k PPD.

That's awesome! Do you know what the power draw is at the wall socket? I would be interested in following your example here but am afraid of the total power draw of the system. I don't think I would do the water stuff either.

Sure beats the hell out of my 9 computer c2d SMP farm + PS3 + scattered windows clients. I only get about 24k on a good day.
For with what measure you measure it will be measured to you.

That PS3 can draw up to 200W all by itself depending on its processor tech. I stopped folding with mine as I thought it was not the best use of my power.

I've got no idea what my PPD is from my PS3. Its the 80GB model with backwards compatibility so I assume its a "newer" model that only uses 115W, but even so, it better be producing pretty well. Since its an "advanced" cell processor, I assume its a pretty good producer?

The PS3 does about 900 PPD and uses 115W or 200W. For 115W or 200W you can run a 5,000PPD video card.

Yikes! I figured it was up there with good video cards, heh. There really is no sense in burnin out your PS3 and raising your electric bill for 900PPD. Guess I shoulda asked, heh.

Thanks.

Yeah I ran mine (PS3)a year before the GPU2 client came out and made everything else seem obsolete. :o

The PS3 is officially offline, heh. On a more sad note, I just lost another one of my dedicated SMP folders form the farm today. :(

I priced up a quad core phenom II system with 3x GTX275's for the low low price of $1,680. Might need to save up a little more for that one. :)

About 600w according to the UPS with just the 3 GPU's. The CPU would only provide about 4000PPD and it adds ~200w load which would surpass what my UPS could supply when on battery so I basically need to get something bigger than a 840w UPS. I get ~25k with the 3 GPU's.

I also finally got my backup computer running and it'll provide an additional 10k or so.

Good to see you're back producing in higher numbers again, even if I was getting used to the 5th spot on our team.

We need more dorm-dwelling PC gamers with nVidia GPU's to join Team 2630, though.
