How many parallel services?

Sun Jan 17, 2010 7:52 pm

Just finished a new i7-860 build. Setup 4 parallel folding services. But got to thinking -- the i7s have 4 cores but 8 threads. I'm not up enough on the architecture to know if that means 4 FPUs or 8 which I assume would be the limiting factor.

I don't want to mess with a SMP client that needs to be monitored (understand it still hangs some). When I have to go on business travel it can be weeks before I get back and I'd rather have easy / reliable.

So -- Go with 4 or 8 parallel services?

If folding single core, do 8 of them. When doing SMP you setup up as an 8 processor machine. The core-i7 HyperThreading is a lot better than the stuff on the P4s.
