installation problem???

Wed Jun 18, 2003 2:39 am

I'm trying to install folding@home and the install package wants to install the Via ac97 drivers. The problem is that I don't use onboard sound and have it disabled in the bios. has anyone had a problem similar to this or know a way to get around it? Or can I just install them without affecting my soundblaster drivers?

Woah.

That's got to be the wierdest thing I've heard of. :) Not that it's your fault, but an interesting problem.

The first solution I can think of is to run the FAH3console.exe, you could set it up to run as a system service ( using FireDaemon ) or just run it in a dos window.

Other than that, I'm kind of lost as to what could be causing this.

Yea, I know, wierd problems seem to be my specialty. I seem to be very good at finding/causing them! I do have an ac97 codec installed that besweet uses to encode sound when I encode divx movies, it could be the installer sees this and then goes to see if the drivers are installed.

No, not at all. Far as I know FAH has nothing to do with the soundcard.

At what point in the installation does it say it wants to install the VIA ac97 drivers? Right away? Before the "Folding AT Home Installation" screen pops up?

I have a seen a very similar problem, also with the graphical folding client on a Win2k box. When trying to start the client install, it started the install process for some digital video camera software, which was the most recent program installed on the box. It has something to do with the installer - possibly something in the registry going corrupt, and screwing up. It sounds bizarre, but I have a witness ! To be sure my folding install file was not corrupt, I downloaded it again, and got the same result. I then moved the strange install file to a different machine over the network, and it worked fine. I have only seen this problem once over many folding installs. Welcome to the world of Windows - this is not the strangest thing I have seen, but it ranks high on the list. If you support enough machines, you will see these kinds of things.

I never did pinpoint the problem, but worked around it instead by using the console client, which does not need to be installed - just download and run the .exe. Ideally, use firedaemon, and then it will be out of sight. The console client with firedaemon is the way to go.

I am not sure if I will have problems installing software in the future, as I have not needed to install anything further on the box. It is an office machine, working fine for other things, so I cannot afford the time to mess with it. I am pretty sure Di Maestros 's solution (console client) will work, as it worked for me. The machine in question has been running stable (and folding 24/7) after that for at least 8 weeks now.

If you are also running W2K, let me know. If you pinpoint the problem, I'd love to hear about it. Good Luck!
