What even used Fahcore 11, 200 series and older? If so what do these cards use now for GPU folding, or are they no longer supported?

Sorry about dropping the ball on this. I did considerable, but far from extensive research and then lost track of it among the multitude of open tabs. I found mention of Fahcore 11 as far back as 2008 and they may have been used near the beginning of GPU folding in 2006. When the core 11 (charity triple check) work units finally ended Nvidia G80 (8000 series) and newer cards with 512MBs or more memory could still fold core 15 work units. Not sure if the core 15 work units are still being issued as my 9600GSO card only had 384MBs of memory. All GPU work units after core 15 require a Fermi or newer, or an AMD 5000 series or newer video card.

I think Pande Group is on a path to eliminate A4 and therefore all CPU folding. Evidenced by the recent ending of Bigadv and elimination of A4 bonus, plus I really haven't seen a lot of new development in the A4 realm, have you?

I think the next step is likely the removal of A4 QRB. Without that, I'd probably bring in less than 2K points per day with my CPU; hardly worth the effort and heat generation.

Sad if that happens. I'm not a big-time folder any more, so I'm no longer willing to buy dedicated hardware; furthermore, given that I don't game any more either, I don't have another excuse to buy high-end GPUs. Ahh well, I've pretty much only been running it as a burn-in test for new systems, and for the annual TRFrankenbot effort anyway.

Probably should take myself off the mod list for the DC forum, as I haven't been following the Folding scene closely for a few years now.

As I started following Folding a little closer over the past year, I really don't think there's a whole lot of really huge news there, unless you're part of the crew that's taking in the results and working with it. The Folding forums themselves are helpful; I got relatively quick responses to questions I had. However, I never saw a ton of news.

That doesn't mean I don't think there's a lot of exciting stuff going on with the data being provided. Other people have asked me why I don't just mine for Bitcoins. The answer is because I didn't want to do something that was about me, but something that did something for somebody else. It will probably be a long time before it has tangible results, but if it does, I can be happy that my hardware did something for other people.

Precisely why I do it too. Besides, as I understand it, mining doesn't net any profit anyway. If I'm going to do anything at a loss and not gain at least some artistic or personal value from it, then there's no better reason than doing it "for somebody else". Furthermore, it makes use of my hardware, which is going to get replaced/upgraded at regular intervals anyway. I might as well replace well-worn stuff, right? :)

I don't see that happening. Pande Group has stated numerous times that they have to split different problem types to specific CPU or GPU implementations, and that there were specific CPU projects that they can't port over to the GPU because the work wasn't parallel in nature. I'd be really surprised if that suddenly wasn't a problem anymore...

I'm really starting to hate x15 gpu threads. For having fast Nvidia GPUs, I get WAY TOO MANY of them, they have no early return bonus (so it feels like they're unimportant to the folding project), they take just as long as x17 threads, and make one of my GPUs run hot and loud. Okay, it's just loud, but that makes it feel hot! :x

So I seem to remember that x15 work units aren't long for this world. But I can't find that article anymore (or anything saying that x15s are approaching end of life). Could it be that I have been sent to folding purgatory and only imagined the end of life news article to make myself feel better?

Wow...I have never heard anyone say that before.

sometimes after 3 or 4 months, PG might respond to a question on their Reddit.
More often than not, they don't ever respond.

fact is individual donors make up something like 3% of their current production.
(2000 active donors on with 10,000ppd verse ...75,000 GPU listed on their stats page as active on their stats page)

They just don't care if anybody(individuals) follows or donates anymore.

Well exact numbers instead of off the top of my head:

4526 individual donors with 10,000 ppd average. (any graphic card can achieve this)

Today:
http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/ ... srt=1&p=46
Contrast this with :
verse 72,522 active GPU(amd + both nvidia listed) listed:

http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/mai ... e=osstats2

these 75,522 cpu/gpu seem to support an amazing 264,357 cores !!!

FYI, these figures have been reported for over a year and do not reflect the android project.

http://app.johanssonrobotics.com/folding/

If these stats are wrong, and do not reflect the number of individual donors...PG has known and continued to reported the discrepancy for more than a year.

It was reported at least two if not three times in 2013 and 2014 on the F@H blogs, but it never actually happened and they backtracked. Here was one of the posts https://folding.stanford.edu/home/chang ... -full-fah/

And here is a question on their Reddit:

The official location where PG answers questions regarding policy and donor concerns, seeking to improve communication...after 4 or 5 months

https://www.reddit.com/r/foldingathome/ ... _projects/

Guess what? No response from PG.

What a joke.

[rant1]I never expect "customer service" from academic types, and ESPECIALLY not from academic types who depend on government grants for their study and sustenance. Time and time again, they never seem to "get it". Worst of all are academic types who never work in a real business and then go on to teach. I swear, each level of education degree should have a prerequisite of 5 more years of real life work. It might take 15 years for the first "street educated" doctorates to graduate, but I think it would be the biggest improvement to education since the creation of the first university. [/rant1]

[rant2]
The core x15 work units are a prime example of why academic types never "get it". They have no bonuses, they make one of my graphic cards cry in pain, which makes me cry in pain.

Because there is no early return bonus, I feel that these are not meaningful, important, urgent, or even mildly concerning to Pande Group. But I am not going to waste my time complaining to academic types. Doing so would just frustrate and anger me.

But if these crap x15s keep coming by the end of April, then I'll just quit. I'll just stop folding for the summertime like everybody else does. No sense in having to hear tinnitus twice at once through the hot summer months. No sense in making my house hot and shortening the lifespan of my equipment. Not for work units that are supposedly slated for end of life and nobody at PG/Stanford really feels are important.

I'll start up again after the US Labor Day holiday. And if the crap x15s keep coming after labor day, I'll pause for September and come back for Frankie 2015. Their loss, not mine.

At this point, I just want to hear that Core 18 is back for Maxwell. The new 350.05 hotfix drivers have OpenCL 1.2 support; supposedly Core18 was pulled for Maxwell cards because of a broken OpenCL implementation.

Core18 is supposed to have an early return bonus too.

Has been for over a month...set your card to advanced or Beta(using current drivers as you mention).
You will get core 17 and core 18...IDK adv...but on beta I have not gotten any core 15 for the last month.

But yeah, they have never announced or in anyway communicated the availability.
Perhaps it is just provisional, or random luck on my part...You will never know if you wait for "news" from PG.

Well, sort of an announcement...

Multi-core CPU jobs
May 21, 2015 by Vijay Pande ·

We’ve been getting reports that FAH is low on CPU jobs. We’re in the process of adding more multi-core jobs to existing projects.

Also, currently lead developer Joseph Coffland’s main project is to get a new Gromacs CPU core out to enable some new science on CPU cores (that’s currently only easily doable on GPU cores). We expect a rough ETA for the first testing of that new core to be in a few weeks.

I really hope folders won't have to mess with "beta" or "advanced" flags to get the new and improved GPU core projects.

Also, I'm surprised they haven't been using AVX as they are very late to the party on that. On the flipside, people's CPU overclock stability is going to be tested now

They have traditionally been extremely slow in picking up newer things. Look at how long it took them to start using OpenCL away from CUDA, or a little further back in history, the older SMP library totally sucked on Windows compared to Linux before the move to the newer one.

And you know the drill, once being called out on such issues, the forums will light up but they will still go at their own glacial pace.
