TRFrankenbot 2014 - Unofficially Official Thread

Sun Sep 14, 2014 11:04 am

It's almost that time of year again...just sayin'!

Edit: Changed thread title rather than start a new one....

Let the game begin (well, in about 35 minutes from this edit)! 31 days to go!

I will probably be moving back to stock for the CPU, so my output will not be as high as last year. Hopefully we have you guys and some new heavy hitters to pick all up the slack (not that my points output are high to begin with).

Last year was a blowout moonshot. I really wanted to have a bigger box by now but real life got in the way. With upcoming house and car costs in view, I don't think I'll be able to build a new system until after the new year.

But as always, we will take whatever each person's rig/farm can bring home and we'll do it with a smile, whether the points are higher or lower. I'm not about to start worrying about it! :D

Definitely looking forward to this. It gives me a chance to tinker with my little systems.

I seem to have misplaced the pass code for tr Frankie. Would someone please send it my way? Thanks.

To celebrate the month with Halloween, some of the members change their Folding @ Home credentials to fold for team Tech Report and user name TRFrankenbot. Then as October rolls along we'll chat about it in this thread.

Last year's discussion in the forum - http://techreport.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=89358&hilit=Frank+2013&start=150

I'll have a few systems to add, but not as many as last year.

In a good month I can yield close to 4 million points. Assuming no more food fights break out and spill over from the mess hall to the engine room. Contrary to popular theory, grilled cheese sandwiches are not a viable substitute for deuterium. And they make a mess of any warp reactor. That's why we now have a strict grilled cheese containment policy. GCP 103. Even the ensigns have to know it. ESPECIALLY the ensigns.

Could someone please send me the passkey? Probably won't get to use it as it's getting pretty warm here, but maybe I can get some points in before the heat demands indecency.

Any bold predictions for this year? 20 M points would put us in the top 9 for team TR.

Anyone still able to fold BigAdv units? I would not think so. The majority of production will depend on whether we have enough GPU folders that are capable for x17 and x18 (?) units. I don't think we will reach 20M this year unless we have some big time GPU folders joining in the fun. ;)

Hmm, reasons to finish the post-BBQ Devils Canyon build with a 970. Ugly 4 months for unplanned spending, though (insurance, property taxes, construction, pr0n).
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

I've got a couple of builds I've been intending to do (using mostly parts on hand). Will probably throw the F@h client on them as a burn-in test as my contribution this year.

Is it worth throwing up HTPC laptop? Core2 T7200? I've been out of the game for so long, but it seems like only GPU's are worth any value.

Yes, still chowing down on BA's. Never used GPU's for folding, SMP only. :)

What's the ppd output like these days? Haven't they bumped to mandatory 32-cores already, taking out a whole bunch of potentially capable systems?

If newegg does it right. I will put it on Frankie. We will see what it does on PPD. I have more, as
you all know. Depends on particpation how much I throw in! 20 Mil, yes I could do that myself???

Fold On,

Well, I know how Ned feels.

Last night, came home to a blue-screen. Restarted, then woke up this morning to a computer completely OFF. It folds 24/7 so has no sleep parameters. Rebooted again, and within 20 minutes was treated to a horrible grinding noise! The LED on the pump is red, indicating heat...yet it doesn't seem hot. I think the water pump in the H80i is about to go. If so, it only lasted 18 months...

Anyway, this will be the last post I make from the Firehorse for a day or two. I'll keep in touch from the spacedock comm system. Powering down now and off to Tigerdirect today to pick up another CPU cooler.

9/30 Edit: Back in business with a new cooler. I plan to switch to Frankie later today.

Damn, October 1st crept up on me. Might not have time to get ramped up for a few days yet, but I'll definitely throw a few systems into the fray!

I've switched over. Couldn't quite pass Mantis on time to get into the top 10; stuck on them x15 WUs again... Not that I would have held it for long with Frankie having been awakened :D

Yeah, welcome all!

As I was typing this, my GPU just sent up another 36K points. Looks like the x17's they're dishing out now are half the size of the ones I was working on a week ago. These complete in about 7 hours.

I noticed Frankie's throughput fell off today, so I checked my own rig this evening and sure enough, the GPU slot was hosed and hadn't processed anything since yesterday. It appeared to be stuck "downloading". Grr!

A reboot of my workstation and a power cycle of my router and DSL modem fixed that, and I picked up an x16 work unit. 8 hours to finish and will only get 1800 points, ugh! :x

I also looked for some news and found a couple of news updates on F@H. For your reading here.

Thanks for that. Looking at the FAH forums, it seems the new Assignment Server may be behind x17 WUs not being dished out. Sounds like they are looking into it and may have fixed it now. Hope so; my GPUs' output will go up 3-4x with x17, which should give Frankie a much needed boost.

Yep, I was thinking the same thing, but I also observed that our total count of work units completed had fallen off on 10/02 as compared to 10/01. I doubt we can give all the blame to the x16 WUs for that. Something more (or less, heh!) was going on. Maybe that assignment server was bogging other people's GPU slots like it did mine. Or it could have been a completely unrelated issue.

My own contributions are definitely looking up after last night's reboot; I completed that one really low-point x16 WU, and am now working on a 7-hour x17, good for about 36K (knock on wood)...

And looking at Frankie's stats this morning, it appears that we're mostly back to the prior trend in terms of our total number of WUs being processed. I think there's a good chance we'll break 300K for today. :)

Just tossed 2 systems into the mix. Will try to add another 8 core FX in the next few days.

Got my health monitoring page back up as well, so I can easily check on things remotely. Hmm, looks like the FX-8320 is running a little warm... might need to clean some dust out of the CPU HSF. :-?
