Awesome SSD deal from Newegg - 256GB for $199.

Thu Jun 30, 2011 5:08 am

From 10 am until 12:59 pm Pacific Time, Newegg will have the Western Digital SiliconEdge Blue 256GB SSD for only $199.99.
It's a shell shocker deal and I doubt it'll last long.

Not bad! Just had a quick look into it, when TR did a write up of SSD price-performance this time last year, that drive was $668!!

For a 256GB drive, with 200MB/s reads, and 170MB/s writes, it's not bad..but i'd personally spring for a drive half the capacity, but twice the performance.

More to the point, I wish I could buy from the other side of the pond, as that WD drive is about £425 here. :o Not cool.

Here are a couple of reviews (from March 2010, so I'm not entirely sure this is the same thing): AnandTech and LegitReviews. It appears to be using a revised JMicron controller -- no stuttering, but the random reads and writes are still pretty bad for an SSD. Also, the power consumption listed on Newegg is huge -- 0.6W idle, 2/3.5W Read/Write. For comparison the Crucial M4 gets 0.085W idle, 0.16W active.

I can see why they're putting it on sale -- at $499, it makes absolutely no sense with much better 256GB SSDs at close to $400 (the above M4 is only $419). I don't care about sequential access, but the random reads and writes are kind of low so I think I'll pass. Still, at less than $1 per GB, it might be worth it for some people.

Would make a great Steam drive I think...

Or a laptop upgrade, power consumption notwithstanding. I'd be interested to see if firmware updates over the past year have improved this drives random read/write performance.

BTW, this exact same deal is on newegg.ca as well.

The relatively "high" power consumption is still lower than 7200RPM notebook drives and has proven time and again to have relatively little impact on battery life, when the CPU, chipset, and screen all draw way more power.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

Do you really think it would be worth it with a laptop? I'll have a new one soon with a 640GB 7200RPM hard drive. I don't really need more than 256GB (only using 100GB in Windows and maybe 40GB in Linux right now). Would this be significantly faster despite the relatively pitiful random read and write performance?

I'm intrigued. Getting two of these for less than the cost of a SATA3 256GB SSD seems like a good deal. Even these "slower" and older model SSDs should rightly smoke my WD 1TB Caviar Black.

I sure do. I have an old OCZ Agility in my HTPC and even though the performance can't stand up to the latest generation, the relative lack of latency compared to any mechanical drive still gives it that snappy SSD feel. For a laptop you have the added benefits reduced heat/power consumption and increased durability.

I'm having a hard time not pulling the trigger on this as an upgrade for an Asus 1215n. Been contemplating an SSD for this thing for a while, but didn't want to spend too much. Even the higher performing 80-120GB drives in my price range would limit my storage amount more then I'd like.

Hah. I wasn't even remotely fast enough to get this deal.

I was fast enough to put it in my cart, but not to check out. I'm hoping that by Christmas, the better SSDs will have declined in price by 25% or so. If not, I'll get one next year.
