Gigabyte 5850 - fan dying

Sun May 27, 2012 12:50 pm

Hi Experts,

I have a GV-R585OC-1GD (ironically called the Ultra Durable series) which I purchased in Sept 2010. One of the fans has developed a severe rattle/grinding noise. I assume the bearings are shot. I've done some quick searches on ebay etc to find a source for a new fan. There are no real specifications on the Gigabyte support page. Does anyone have a suggestion about how I might get a replacement fan (or how to fix the current one)?

thanks

Thanks for the quick response. Do you think that will fit OK? I'm not sure if my gigabyte card is just reference layout under the 'fancy' cooler.

Update

OK. Why is nothing simple...? I ordered an Arctic Cooling GPU fan/heatpipe. It looked good, and I put it on carefully. Booted up and everything seemed fine. Then my computer kept crashing (freezing - with a black screen). It turns out that the fans on the Arctic Cooling unit were not spinning! I tried all sorts of methods but was unable to get the fans working. So, RMA back to NCIX. I wanted an exchange but they had nor more stock. So, right now i'm running on my old 8800GTS that I 'stole' out of the kids' computer. But I plan on McGyvering something on the original fan shroud. I'm going to go look for some parts tomorrow, but will likely remove the faulty fan and ziptie a 10 cm fan (or something like this) to my 5850 and splice it into the power cord... we'll see. I'll post a pic of the final product.

I just hope that I didn't cook my 5850 when I had it running super hot (no fan). It's incredible how fast they heat up. Those heatpipes are almost too hot to touch within 1 min.

ok, i'm finally updating this thread.

I bought a 10 cm case fan. And as I mentioned, I ziptied it to the fan shroud after removing the original fan, and spliced the wiring together. It seems to be working fine, although it is not as quiet as the original. Here are a couple pics. Everyone be in awe of my mad mod skillz!!

A 120mm with LEDs would be "cooler". Might block a PCIe slot on some boards though.

"McGyvering"

Favourite show when I was a kid.
Worth grabbing some for nostalgic viewing, or will that ruin my memory of it?

Unfortunately, it will probably ruin the memories. Just like watching old shows of the original A-Team or Dukes of Hazzard. Mr-T doesn't look as tough and Daisy isn't near as beautiful as we remember either. She was just a tramp in jean cutoffs.

A card worth keeping.

Can't tell the fan maker- there are likely quieter options for this fix.

So you gave up on the aftermarket upgrade? I did one and it worked great - was much quieter. Asus 5850.

I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to subtract points for non matching colored zip ties. Two blue, Two yellow, and one green. Get with the program!
I dont think, therefore I am not.

The zip ties should have been blue to match the Gigabyte theme?

I had a whole mix of zip ties. I thought the different colours looked more interesting... Now I've been humiliated by my lack of fashion sense on a tech site. At least I can only go up from here! :D

I just got a relatively cheap fan from a local shop. The Arctic Cooling one I had ordered didn't work, and they didn't have any more in stock at NCIX. The RMA with NCIX was very painless and they refunded the cash very quickly. I didn't want to go through the hassle of ordering another aftermarket cooler... Lame I know.

It turns out that I've now found what could have been a good solution on ebay...

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/New-75mm-ATI-HD-4870-5850-Video-Card-Fan-Replacement-40mm-4Pin-YD128015HL-0-34A-/170845035644?pt=US_Video_Card_GPU_Cooling&hash=item27c7285c7c

Based on the description, this fan would have fit in the shroud just like the original and maintained the 2-slot size of the card. I'm undecided if I should spend another $20 (with shipping) on the card for the fan - and more importantly I'd lose the coloured zip ties!

Anyone want to buy my card? It still works great! Make me an offer - I'll have a special deal for Tech Report peoples!!
