downloading Windows 8 Pro Upgrade process

Sun Oct 28, 2012 4:39 pm

Hi. I was curious about the process. I have 2 computers. I want to purchase and download the $39.99 upgrade for Windows 8 Pro to my current computer desktop but I want to install it on another computer. I do not want to install it to the machine that is making the purchase and download.

Will there be a problem with that? Or do I have to install it on the same machine that is purchasing/downloading the media? All of this activation/licensing is confusing me. My intent is to download it and then burn a DVD and then install on the other computer.

When using their application to download, you have the option to either install it in place (which works great!) or download it for a disk. Haven't done that, but I will be doing it with my third machine, tonight possibly. I'd like to make a USB drive out of it if I can.

so just so i'm clear, it's okay to buy and download to machine A and then burn the disc and install to machine B?

if that's the case, thank you!

Yep! Exactly. You can burn to disc, create a bootable USB, or install on the computer that is running the upgrade assistant. Bootable USB is what i opted for.

Anyone know if this works on top of an MSDN:AA Windows 7 license / product key?

It's not expensive to try :).

I don't think it cares what license you have, as long as your OS is installed and activated.

I did successfully upgrade one Windows 7 Home laptop to Windows 8 Pro using the $40 download-only process. I don't even know where to get Windows 8 non-Pro.
