Windows Live Mesh Replacement

Wed Jan 09, 2013 9:38 pm

I knew this day was coming but its still hard now that its here. Microsoft is officially killing off windows live mesh and replacing it with Sky Drive. Sky Drive is great and all (maybe... I don't know or care actually) but along with this shift they are taking away the one feature of mesh that I loved which was the instantaneous direct syncing of files from one computer to another without using a specific folder or messing with symlinks.

I like to keep my documents, music and pictures synced between my desktop and laptop. I could theoretically prune it down but that would take a lot of work and I'd rather just have it all no matter what computer I'm using. In total its probably 100 GB and tens of thousands of files. For me it doubles as backup system. I don't need a way to access the files over the internet (Thats the beauty of having them locally!).

Does anyone know of any free alternatives out there? The closest thing I came across was but to get the direct syncing between computers costs money. Other ideas? Anyone else disappointed that mesh is going the way of the dodo?

My brother and I were just talking about this kind of stuff.
1st, it looks like you may be able to keep mesh working for a while longer according to this. ... ials-2012/

cubby looks like a good bet try, like you said.

Here are some others I am going to test out.

I am gonna install all of them on my home PC, put some stuff in a folder, then go and install on my work PC and see what happens. :)

Glad to see I'm not the only one disappointed to see it go.

I'm uncertain that even if you can install it whether it will continue to function. It has a pretty significant tie-in to Microsoft's web services so I'm not sure it will work without their support (which they say they are dropping).

I like the look of Power Folder! I'll have to give that a go. Let me know what your experiences are like with the programs you try!
