Best RAM for non K i5 ivybridge

Mon Aug 12, 2013 6:59 am

I have an Asus p8z77 V pro (i5 3570 - OS7 64) and wish to know what is the best RAM to choose. need 16GB.
Question 1: is 2x8 or is 4x4 better as I wont be getting any more ram later.?
I believe faster Hz is also best but is it as stable or does that not matter?
Question 2 : is there a frequency that this board performs best with ?
or is stock standard 1600 better?
Question 3 : is a lower voltage than 1.5 better for performance or what ?

I would stick to 2 x 8gb sticks, 2 Less sticks means less of a chance of having one go bad down the road. As for speed I would go with 1866 with 9,9,9,24 latencies. You get a decent jump from 1600 memory in bandwidth and it is still pretty inexpensive. Go to a higher 2133 memory the cost outweighs the performance gain you will get.
1866 is the happy medium.
As for voltage 1.5v is as high as you need to go,also if you have a air cooler that might interfere with your memory slots then do not purchase memory with tall heatsinks.
Here is a nice crucial 1866 2x 8 gb set that uses 1.5v and has tight 9,9,9,24 timings those are nice tight timings that are usually used with 1600mhz memory. ... 6820148740 159$ Crucial Ballistix Tactical

here is some nice 2x8gb ddr31600 with 8,8,8,24 super tight timings
I even checked for motherboard compatibility for you and they were not listed, but they did work in a ASUS P8Z77-V Deluxe board that is pretty much the same board you have with some extra goodies. On top of that they were able to overclock them to 2200mhz If you want to overclock your memory, Also you can adjust your turbo so all 4 cores are at a 38x multiplier and turn up your block to probably 105mhz perhaps higher giving you 4ghz. But that is something you will have to play with. ... 6820148561 120$ Crucial Ballistix
Both sets are made by Crucial that is a good name brand. With X.M.P profiles, so they should work fine at there rated timings and voltage.

Important for laptop (battery life) or servers (dozens of sticks pulling power and generating heat)

Using two sticks...why should you care? That said, Intel recommends(strongly) 1.5 V to be in compliance with their chip-sets.

Agree with above on all else.

One other advantage of buying 2 bigger sticks is if you do happen to upgrade down the road, you can without tossing your old sticks.

I'll agree with what the others have said. I'll add a third set of Crucial RAM for your consideration in addition to the two excellent ones that Vargis14 linked:
$125 2x8 GiB PC3-12800 Crucial BLS2K8G3D1609ES2LX0 (DDR3-1600, CAS 9, 1.35 V, very low profile)

This RAM defaulted to DDR3-1600 speed right out of the box. Most of the other brands have to be set to something faster than DDR3-1333 in the BIOS. It's also got an XMP profile for DDR3-1866 at CAS 10.
i7-8700K, H100i v2, RoG Strix Z370-G Gaming, 16 GiB, RX Vega64, 960Pro SSD, 5TB HDD, Define Mini-C, SS-660XP2, C32HG70, RK-9000BR, MX518
