I'm not quite a power user these days to the degree I was back in my pre-law school days and in the decade after. If I can find a good stick of DDR3 for cheap, I'd probably pull the trigger on it. But I can't say that I truly need to. I didn't know if I needed to upgrade beyond 8GB, but I'm glad I did. I like having the overhead that Brew spoke about. It was fun building a new system, though. I had forgotten how enjoyable it is until Brew hooked me up with some parts for the new system. Now, I find myself loitering on the Egg when I should be doing something else.

IMO fast user switching is just a bad idea in general. Furthermore, with so many people using their mobile devices as their primary means of accessing the internet, shared desktop PCs and leaving multiple users logged in is less important/useful than it was anyway. TBH I don't know anyone who even uses the feature.

me! and I know a few others, even my MIL, who have it set up this way.

When there's a family desktop machine, you can either have arguments ... or you enable user switching. IME.

The other solution is you all have a computer each, but I at least wouldn't get that past the sniff test from the budget side unless they were £200 crap laptops, and then I'd have another problem. I also wouldn't try because it would invite discussion of why we need to have a desktop and a chunk of a room allocated to housing (desking?) the beast with the Vega 56 and a 27" 144 Hz Freesync monitor when it's now single-user...

IME, user switching is a godsend, nowadays more than ever because everyone has their own cloud stuff (iCloud, music library, Steam library ...) and so each individual having an account is necessary. YMMV, ofc!

Works fine for us. I keep my desktop layout, work software, documents folder, iTunes login, etc. partitioned from my wife and she keeps her stuff likewise separated from mine. I rely on the PC much more heavily than she does but there are some tasks (e.g. large photo orders, tracking the household budget) where a PC with large displays makes life a lot easier, and Fast User Switching means we can each run our desktop space our own way without stepping on each other.
