Anyway, it now runs Ubuntu 7.04 and I'm running into all sorts of trouble. It just is too new. If anyone else here tries to get a *nix system running on santa rosa, I'd like some feedback.
Firstly, video. I've compiled my own 2.6.21 kernel since 2.6.20 that comes with ubuntu 7.04 isn't supported by intels graphics driver from http://www.intellinuxgraphics.org. Secondly, it requires xserver 1.3 so I compiled that and the most up to date xorg to my new kernel. After this I got the video driver running, though without glx working (no 3D acceleration).
After checking around some, I found that libglx didn't get compiled with xorg. Shouldn't it have? What do I have to do to get it working?
Next, sound. No luck at all. I got latest alsa 1.0.14rc4 (see 1.0.14 is out now, will try it later), it recognizes my card, aplay -l reports:
Code: Select all
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: HDA Generic [HDA Generic]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 6: Si3054 Modem [Si3054 Modem]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
But no sound out of speakers nor headphones. It seem like ICH8 should be supported, but I have found nothing about support for the Realtek 268 codec in this machine.
Now, networking. Works with latest ndiswrapper (1.46 now) but is very very unstable, kernel panics, infinite loops, and complete lockdown after about 40-50MB of transfers normally. The open source intel driver seem to support 4965AGN now, but was hard to install. Will get on this soon. Running a old external broadcom 802.11g card atm.
SD-card reader doesn't seem to be recognized, and I haven't been able to come any further with this.
Webcam is recognized, but doesn't seem to be supported by any drivers in linux. SuYin seem to be the manufacturer of what Acer here calls "Crystal Eye".
Bluetooth seem to work well out of the box, even though I haven't connected it to anything yet.
I believe that covers most of the current state of my laptop. Power management works well and I can use it for most things already, but sound, 3D acceleration, and stable networking would be very appreciated.

If anyone have any suggestions for how to get a santa rosa laptop up running well in linux, please post some feedback.
