Deal of the week: Beauty and the Beast

To tie in with our latest poll, we've spotted a back-to-school special at Newegg on Viewsonic's VX2025wm 20.1" wide-screen monitor. Dell's UltraSharp wide-screen displays often get all the credit, but this Viewsonic model has the same specifications as the UltraSharp 2007WFP, and it's is a good deal cheaper. At just $329.99, the VX2025wm costs less than the UltraSharp even after a heavy round of Dell's usual rebates. However, the Viewsonic display does lack the TV inputs, USB ports, and height-adjustability available on the Dell. If you've already got a nice TV and some USB ports at the front of your case, however, you shouldn't miss those extras.

Our second deal is Western Digital's 150GB Raptor, which is now down to $199.99 with a $50 mail-in rebate. We're not usually fond of mail-in rebates, but that's a 20% drop in price for the fastest Serial ATA drive we've tested. It may not be anywhere near the $0.30 per gigabyte of last week's Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB, but it's still very appealing for use as an operating system and applications drive or for storage-intensive tasks.
