Apple initiates battery recall; others to follow?
Just a week and a half after Dell's massive battery recall, Apple has
followed suit by recalling 1.8 million notebook batteries
due to a risk of excessive heat and fire. According to an article
Laptop Logic, Apple is one of a number of manufacturers including Dell,
Fujitsu, HP, Lenovo, and Toshiba to use Sony batteries in its laptops.
Fujitsu, HP, and Toshiba claim they are not affected by the problems, but Apple hasn't been so lucky. Nine users have reported
overheating batteries, Apple says, two of which involved "minor burns
." The recall affects batteries in iBook G4 and PowerBook G4
notebooks sold from October 2003 up until this month. For more
information, users can either call Apple at 1-800-275-2273 or try
getting to the company's support
, which seems to be down right now.
Next in line for potential recalls could be Sony itself; a Kansas
City-based TV station reported
yesterday that a local woman had her Sony Vaio laptop burst into
flames while turned off, and then do so a second time after she put out the
first fire with an extinguisher.
