Cheaper mobile Core 2 Duo coming next month
The mobile Core 2 Duo processor lineup
currently starts at $209 with the 1.66GHz Core 2 Duo T5500, but Intel could reach further down the price scale with a new chip as early as next month. Moles at Taiwanese notebook makers have told DigiTimes that the chipmaker is prepping a new Core 2 Duo T5200 processor
intended for notebook vendors. The sources say the chip will fill a role similar to that of the current Core Duo T2250 and Core Duo T2050, "unofficial" models that employ a slower front-side bus speed (533MHz instead of 667MHz) than the rest of the Core Duo lineup and are featured in entry-level notebooks.
Sure enough, a spec sheet for a new notebook from European PC vendor Fujitsu-Siemens lists the Core 2 Duo T5200 as having the same 1.60GHz clock speed, 533MHz front-side bus, and 2MB of L2 cache as the Core Duo T2050. No price is listed for the chip itself, but DigiTimes' Taiwanese moles say it will sport a "much lower" price tag than the $209 Core 2 Duo T5500.
