Deal of the week: 30% off AMD's Athlon 64 X2 5200+

AMD quietly added the Athlon 64 X2 5200+ to its desktop lineup three months ago, but the chip was missing in action for a long while following its launch. Even after finally becoming available, the 5200+ lingered above its $403 launch price for weeks. Things have now changed, however; the chip is widely available, and it can even be had for much less than $403. Today, we spotted the chip selling for just $287 at Newegg. That's actually less than what the retailer is charging for the slower 5000+ model, which makes this a pretty sweet deal.

The Athlon 64 X2 5200+ may not topple Intel's $309 Core 2 Duo E6600, but our testing with the 5000+ suggests the 5200+ shouldn't be far behind. Considering the wealth of cheap enthusiast motherboards available for Socket AM2, this is a particularly good deal for AMD loyalists stuck with tighter budgets.
