Deal of the week: Cheap Athlon 64 X2s

We saw last week that Newegg was selling the Athlon 64 X2 5200+ processor for $287 instead of the $403 listed on AMD's processor pricing page, and we thought that was a pretty darn good deal. Today, we've noticed that ZipZoomFly is offering significantly reduced prices on AMD's entire line of Athlon 64 X2 processors, from the 3800+ to the 5200+ (the new 5400+ and 5600+ models don't seem to be available anywhere yet.) Here are ZipZoomFly's prices next to AMD's official pricing for reference:

AMD price

ZZF price
Athlon 64 X2 3800+ $152.00 $130.50
Athlon 64 X2 4200+ $187.00 $163.50
Athlon 64 X2 4600+ $240.00 $201.80
Athlon 64 X2 5000+ $301.00 $261.00
Athlon 64 X2 5200+ $403.00 $278.80
At those prices, the X2 4600+, 5000+, and 5200+ chips actually look like pretty interesting alternatives to Intel's $220 Core 2 Duo E6400 and $309 Core 2 Duo E6600. As for the 4200+ and 3800+ models, they're priced even further away from Intel's cheapest Core 2 Duo, which currently costs $183. Not bad, especially considering the prevalence of cheap enthusiast motherboards for Socket AM2.
