AMD cuts Athlon 64, X2 prices

— 9:27 AM on January 22, 2007

We noticed one month ago that prices for AMD's Athlon 64 X2 processors at some online stores were significantly lower than the figures in AMD's official price list. AMD might have taken its time, but the company has now finally updated its price list to reflect the lowered prices. The cuts apply to the Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 X2 lineups, and they range from 5% to as much as 26.8% in the case of the Athlon 64 X2 5200+:

Processor

Old price

New price

Athlon 64 X2 5600+ $505 $505
Athlon 64 X2 5400+ $485 $485
Athlon 64 X2 5200+ $403 $295
Athlon 64 X2 5000+ $301 $285
Athlon 64 X2 4800+ $271 $244
Athlon 64 X2 4600+ $240 $215
Athlon 64 X2 4400+ $214 $203
Athlon 64 X2 4200+ $187 $173
Athlon 64 X2 4000+ $169 $158
Athlon 64 X2 3800+ $152 $138
Athlon 64 3800+ $108 $101
Athlon 64 3500+ $91 $91
These prices are actually slightly higher than those we saw last month. However, a quick look through our price search engine shows that not a whole lot has changed since late December. The Athlon 64 X2 5200+ can be snatched away for $274.50 instead of the $295 AMD suggests, while the Athlon 64 X2 5000+ is available for a scant $262—yet again roughly $20 lower than the official figure. Too bad AMD's 65nm Athlon 64 X2 4000+, 4400+, 4800+, and 5000+ chips are still MIA from online retailers over a month and a half after being announced, though.
