AMD intros new Opterons, cuts prices


The Opteron line gained a few new models this morning, and AMD has taken the opportunity to slash Opteron prices across the board. Here's what the new Opteron lineup looks like:

If you're not familiar with AMD's Opteron naming scheme, the x220 chips run at 2.8GHz, the x218 chips run at 2.6GHz, and so on down in 200MHz increments until the x210s, which are clocked at 1.8GHz. The leading numbers (1, 2, or 8) signify the maximum number of sockets supported, while the SE and HE suffices mean high and low power consumption, respectively.

AMD's new chips include Opteron x220 models, low-power Opteron x218 HE models, and a handful of new power-efficient HE chips in the Socket AM2 Opteron 1000 line. The x220 chips have 95W thermal envelopes, compared to 119W for the SE models, and the x128 HE chips are rated for just 68W, compared to 95W for their x218 non-HE counterparts.
