AMD releases Catalyst 7.4 graphics drivers

Hot on Nvidia's heels, AMD has released a new set of Catalyst graphics drivers, bringing them to version 7.4. Like the previous release, these new drivers are available for Windows XP x86, Windows XP x64, Windows Vista x86, and Windows Vista x64. According to AMD's release notes, the 7.4 Catalysts improve OpenGL performance for all Radeon X1000-series products under Windows Vista. Improvements of 15% or more in games like Doom 3, Quake 4, and Prey are "typical," AMD says, and enthusiast-class products can even see speed gains of "30% or more."

Performance improvements aside, the Vista x86 version of the drivers introduces AMD's ATI Avivo Video Converter. The converter can transcode videos to formats like MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4/DivX, Windows Media Video, and H.264 using Radeon X1000-series cards.

As for the usual round of bug fixes, the Vista versions of the Catalyst 7.4 drivers fix issues in Battlefield 2, City of Heroes, Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide, Quake 4, Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI, and Unreal Tournament 2004. In Windows XP, the new drivers resolve issues in 3DMark03-GT3, Call of Duty, Dungeon Lord, Prey, and Tribal Trouble. A complete list of bug fixes is available in the aforementioned release notes for the drivers.
