40GB PlayStation 3 outfitted with 65nm Cell, RSX

Apparently, lower hard drive capacity, reduced price, and a lack of PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility aren't the only changes users can expect in the upcoming 40GB version of Sony's PlayStation 3 console. According to a report by German site Computer Base, the new console that's scheduled to hit U.S. stores early next month is also outfitted with fresh chips based on 65nm process technology.

Computer Base says both the PS3's Cell microprocessor and its RSX graphics processor have enjoyed a die shrink from 90nm to 65nm. To accommodate the new processors, the console has reportedly been upgraded with a new motherboard (revision name SEM-001), a new south bridge (dubbed CXD2984GB), and a smaller heat pipe. Sony has also made some other changes, such as swapping Samsung memory chips for Elpida ones and adding a battery on the motherboard.

Of course, the biggest change of all—and the one that may matter most to users—is that the 40GB PS3's power consumption has dipped dramatically. Computer Base quotes 135W at full load, down from 200W. The site says the console's noise levels are down from 1.3 to 0.5-0.8 sones, as well. (Thanks to Engadget for the tip.)
