There's a new kid on the block where all the cheap, ultraportable notebooks hang out. It's not an entirely new product, but a more affordable version of Asustek's popular Eee PC notebook. Unlike the $399.99 Eee PC 4G that became available last month, the new Eee PC 4G Surf that just popped up on Newegg can be had for $349.99.
That $349.99 gets you an Intel processor, 7" display, 4GB solid-state hard drive, 512MB of DDR2 RAM, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, a customized Linux-based operating system, and a battery with a rated capacity of 2.8 hours. In other words, it's more or less the same system as its more expensive sibling, but with no camera and 2:48 hours of battery life instead of 3:30 hours. Not too bad for $50 less, although the shorter battery life could handicap a system that's designed largely with portability in mind.
