Nvidia quietly introduces GeForce 9600 GSO

Remember when we reported on rumors that Nvidia would re-brand its GeForce 8800 GS as a GeForce 9600 GSO? Well, the company seems to have gone ahead and done just that. The Nvidia website now has a listing for a GeForce 9600 GSO graphics card, and its specifications are eerily similar to those of the GeForce 8800 GS.

96 stream processors? Check. 500MHz core and 1375MHz shader clock speeds? Check. 384MB of 800MHz GDDR3 memory with a 192-bit memory interface? Check again. Nvidia doesn't get into further details, but we'd wager the 9600 GSO is based on the same stripped-down G92 graphics processor as the 8800 GS, too. Aside from the name, only one thing seems to have actually changed: the cooler, which now resembles the GeForce 9600 GT's more than the 8800 GT's. (Not that there's much of a difference between the two to begin with, but there you go.)

We couldn't find the GeForce 9600 GSO listed either at Newegg or through our price search engine just yet. However, considering GeForce 8800 GS models start at $129.99 on Newegg, one would think Nvidia will stick around that figure with the 9600 GSO.
