Poll: Which PC game are you most looking forward to this year?

In case you haven’t noticed, there’s a boatload of new games heading to PCs and consoles before the end of this year. From Bethesda’s Fallout 3 to Valve’s Left 4 Dead, or from Mirror’s Edge to the Grand Theft Auto IV PC port, there ought to be enough good games to please everyone. But that raises an important question: which one are you most looking forward to?

Since we have a handy poll system we can use to ask multiple-choice questions like that, we’ve updated it with a list of upcoming blockbusters. Nine of them, to be precise. We might’ve missed one or two, but that’s what the “Other” option is for.

Feel free to cast your vote either below or on our front page to let us know your pick. Don’t hesitate to post in the comments to explain your selection (and talk down other choices), too.

I’m extremely excited for Fallout 3, but I believe I will play it on the 360. For PC I am most looking forward to STALKER: Clear Sky. I will only have 17 hours to wait! SO VERY EXCITED!

I have not voted as the question is mute in so far that DRM will stop me from buying any of these games.

This week I thought I would fire up IL2 FB only to discover the the Securom does not play nice with Vista Ultimate 64bit.

I was torn between Left 4 Dead and Mirror’s Edge. Since I’ll probably be playing Mirror’s Edge on X360 if it all (DIE EA AND SECUROM!!), that really only leaves L4D for me.

Has anyone else noticed that we’re still in a FPS rut on PC? We got a few good non-shooter titles, but now all the upcoming stuff is FPS again.

If anything kills PC gaming, it’ll be the utter glut of FPS titles and everything non-FPS deserting to consoles.

    Far Cry 2

Fallout 3 is the closet choice, but there is no compelling game on the foreseeable horizon.

Starcraft 2 is going to be both one of the biggest blockbuster and disappointments from Blizzard. It screams “I am the bastard child of -[

      • ludi

Starcraft was fun at the casual level but the hardcore veterans were engaging in nothing more than a highly-linear application of resource economics. There are certain things you must do with each class and certain things you cannot do, else you lose every time. Do the right things, and your odds of winning break down to whether or not the other guy had more caffeine and maintains composure under pressure. Strategy and skill had only a side role; you can either click fast enough on the right entities or you can’t.

If Starcraft 2 can at least match that experience whyile expanding some of the options, then it can’t do worse than Starcraft, which all things considered did very well.

        • 0g1

Starcraft is not linear … its like chess. All the units are useful throughout a game and to win you need to use them to counteract the opponents units.

Strategy and skill are the main role of the game and to use them effectively you need to have high apm. You also need some luck and good scouting skills.

They can screw up SC2 but its mod-ability is going to be very high so even if Blizzard releases a piece of turd, the community will make it successful.

Look at how successful the mods for WC3 are … and SC2 is greatly extending the mod abilities of WC3.

          • Krogoth

AHem, Starcraft is actually closer to Checkers. Simple, quick, straightforward and fun.

TA, Forged Alliance and Supreme Commander are much closer to chess.

Deceptive simple, complex relationships between the different units and factions (more then simple RPS), a good match can take a while, to be competitive requires both a keen understanding of beginning and end-game strategies.

            • 0g1

If starcraft was like checkers, there would only be 1 unit.

I searched for “Supreme Command pro gamer” on youtube.com and got like 9 results (“starcraft pro gamer” had about 900) and was watching a replay of the game because I really have never been interested in it. It looks very similar to TA … a whole mess of units that you spam with little to no strategy. 1 base. Very slow start.

Obviously you don’t know much about strategy. Go watch some Starcraft Broodwar pro gamer vods on youtube.

            • Krogoth

Sigh, Starcraft and its ilk are actually real-time tactics not a true RTS.

The game revolves around how you utillize units, micromanagement and a bit of dumb luck (more apparent at higher tiers of player). The unit and specialty balance is entirely rock, paper, scissors.

Besides, these days these days Brood Wars is typically synonymous with Starcraft.

I am not saying that Starcraft is bad or not fun to play. It is just not as deep as its fans claim it to be.

You should at least try Total Annihilation and Supreme Commadner before dismissing them.

      • 0g1

Gameplay wise, Starcraft is the best RTS game.

I agree that SC2 looks like WC3 in space, but they said the same thing about Starcraft when it was in development. They said “it looks like orcs from WC2 in space”, but the looks and feel of the game are always changing.

You can’t possibly know that SC2 is going to underwhelm and disappoint SC1 fans. Going by Blizzards record, this game is a long way from being finished.

        • Krogoth

If you like click-fest + rock, paper and scissors then be my guess.

I used to be a hardcore blizzard RTS fan long time ago, but Total Annihilation and its spiritual successors Supreme Commander and Forged Alliance completely blew me away gameplay-wise.

Starcraft is fun for quick matches with some micromanagement. For the life of me, I can never understand why people still keep raving that it is the best RTS ever.

          • 0g1

Yeah, I do like a click fest … part of the skill to the game. Speaking of skill, why is it that so many skilled players play starcraft and so few play TA/supreme commander? Maybe because TA has no skill and is boring?

Rock paper scissors is a game of blind luck. Probably more akin to TA than any other RTS game. Starcraft involves scouting, finding out what they are doing (like chess) and defending against it while also attacking (all basically like real time chess). Once again, I suggest you look into starcraft broodwar a bit more. The game came out in 1998 (10 years ago) and is still the #1 game in South Korea and is very popular across the world.

I’ve never played the original Fallout series, but I really enjoyed STALKER last year with its open-ended world and great environments. I’m curious what Fallout 3 will play like. Will it be similar to STALKER in any way (inventory management, npc quests, open-world), or will it be something completely different? I’ve never played oblivion or morrowind, so when people say that Fallout 3 is “oblivion in a Fallout3 wrapper” I have no idea what they mean. Will it be a FPS with RPG elements, or a RPG with FPS elements?

    thanks for any information

Out of that list maybe Fallout 3 and Mirror’s Edge, as they look to be the most interesting. Far Cry 2 is going to be a disappointment. Stalker: Clear Sky is going to run like crap on current single GPU hardware with details maxed, but it will be a great game even if it’s “more of the same.”

The rest of the list look to be “me too” titles and rehashes.

      • cobalt

      Seconded.

The only reason I didn’t vote Mirror’s Edge is that — to me — it looks more promising as a console game because of the underemphasis on shooting. Irrespective of platform, that would have been my vote.

So I voted Fallout 3. Like another poster below, I somehow neglected its predecessors, but given its heritage I’m still looking forward to it.

      • TurtlePerson2

I’m worried that Far Cry 2 will be a disappointment, but everything they’ve said so far seems good. I don’t know if I trust the studio, but any time someone mentions that they’re making a game based on “Heart of Darkness” (one of the greatest novels ever), my ears perk up.

I’ll wait until it comes out and see the reviews, if it’s everything it’s cracked up to be, it’ll be the first full game I’ve bought at $50 in a long time.

After that, DoW2, StarCraft2, and Red Alert 3, roughly in that order. RA2 and C&C3 disappointed, not sure if RA3 can pull it back.

Of the games in the poll, I cannot see myself playing any of them.

While I voted for DNF for pity’s sake, actually I’m looking forward to WoW’s next expansion the most.

Weak list, I am looking forward to Starcraft II, Diablo III and Demigod.

As well as the expansion for LOTRO.

I really could care less about any of the games on the list. Especially since Fallout 3 is nothing but Oblivion with a Fallout wrapper on it.

Nothing against Oblivion, it was a fine games in itself, but it paled in comparison to its older brother Morrowind.

You mean “couldn’t care less” – have you caught the Kroggithis? He makes mistakes like that.

Starcraft II and Diablo III all sound beautiful and everything, but the poll is about “this year”.

If Demigod is supported like SupCom FA was you might want to just skip it.

Best bet is to buy it 3 to 6 months after it is on sale…

Isn’t buying at least a few months after release always the best bet with games? Patches for improvement and often a good 30-50% discount.

I voted DNF just to be silly but otherwise if I had to choose a game on the list it would be Mirror’s Edge just because it has the potential to be a little different than the norm.

Well my point is to wait to see if they are even going to bother supporting the game. If they haven’t within 3-6 months don’t even bother.

Yeah, that’s the one I want to see, too. I’ll probably play FarCry2 but I’m getting kind of burned out on traditional FPS.

I didn’t think we were going to see either of those this year.

Starcraft 2, Diablo 3? Did you notice the whole ‘this year’ thing?

Battlefield Bad Company for PC. Hey, I can dream, can’t I?

The only game I really play is Battlefield. I recently dropped back to BF2 from 2142. Despite all the FPS’s, I still don’t really see anything on that list ready to really replace it’s style and diversity of gameplay.

GTA4. Maybe Fallout 3, though I’ve never played the other games in that series.
