UPDATE: MS Office team doesn’t tease Zune phone launch

We saw the new Zune TV ad this morning. Could this be Microsoft setting the stage for the launch of a Zune phone? The folks at Neowin seem to think so, and they have a good reason for it.

You see, Microsoft’s Office 2010 development team happens to have a Twitter account. And on that Twitter account, the team recently made a couple of posts teasing the arrival of a new Zune product. The first one reads:

June 2009 will be an important month for Zune lovers.

The second post, which appeared 11 hours later, elaborates with the following:

@Gilly2468 @Chimerica @clubdirthill @serenecloud New product launch, that’s all I’m allowed to say. Hold off from buying an iPhone/Pre. 🙂

Short of a pre-announcement, the message looks clear: we should see some type of Zune phone—either a Microsoft device or a third-party handset running Zune software—launch in June. Either way, in light of the comparison with the iPhone and Palm Pre, you can probably expect a sleek touch-screen device.

Update: The Twitter posts were apparently a hoax.

Shots of real hardware from Chinese and Taiwanese websites or blogs are the most reliable rumor source. The fact that everything is made their and the utter disregard for any kind of NDA or secrecy makes them a good source.

Let this be exhibit A of why social networking sites are not reliable news sources.

Nor are they reliable anything, really.

Hmm… I’m very interested in this. I need proper Exchange/ActiveSync ability, and I need to tether. I also don’t want to leave Verizon…

The real question is, what will Apple be doing for July so that we can predict Microsoft’s reaction 2-3 years from nowg{<.<}g

I don’t know if they will soon be bankrupt after the Pre. And quite frankly, I’m going with the Pre because, when it launches in a few days, it’s going to be the best smartphone on the market. Even if Palm goes under after it’s launch, I’ll still have my Pre, and I’ll be quite happy about it.

        Information cohesion FTW!

I don’t think they are going to go bankrupt. Their stock price has gone up almost 500% since the Pre’s showing. Also, and i know that this doesn’t count for much, but a lot of the pre-views (haha) are coming back pretty positive.

The Pre is pre-tty(sorry this is getting silly) much a do or die play for the company. Analysts, investors, and speculators all see a better future for the Palm and so far think they are headed in the right direction.

Tough times tend to sink companies. They can also give them a massive wake up call that will lead them to new horizons.

If they’re going to expand the MS handheld hardware universe, I still think their first priority should be an XBoy.

the disparity between the DS and the PSP kind of sink any hopes for a third handheld gaming system for me.

Seconded. The only way an “XBoy” stands a chance is if it’s able to bridge that gap: Be innovative, kid-friendly, _[
