Announcing TR’s 10th anniversary giveaway

On November 8, 2009, The Tech Report will be ten years old. Can you believe it?

TR has grown from a part-time hobby into a in-depth resource on PC hardware producing daily news and multiple articles each week, complete with a thriving community of readers and a crack team of full-time staffers scattered across three countries.ย  We feel incredibly fortunate to be able to do what we’re doing each day, and we want to thank each of our readers for helping make it possible.

As anyone who’s been following us for a while ought to know, we like celebrating by giving away a whole bunch of hardware. What better way to commemorate our years of covering PC hardware than by letting a bunch of lucky readers get some of the best of it for free?

This isn’t just any anniversary, though. We’ve been in business a whole decade. When we started off, people were still searching the web with AltaVista, sharing their MP3s with reckless abandon on Napster, and raising their eyebrows at that newfangled “Athlon” processor from AMD. Making a phone call usually involved getting off the Internet first, and Pets.com was still in business.

We needed to kick things up a notch this time.

And so we did. Thanks to the tremendous support of Asus, Corsair, Gigabyte, OCZ, and XFX, we’ve orchestrated our grandest giveaway ever. Over the next week, we’ll be giving out over 118 prizes (yes, over one hundred and eighteen) with a total dollar value exceeding $8,000. One lucky winner will also walk away with the grand prize, which should please anyone familiar with our system guide.

You don’t have to buy anything, sign up for a new credit card, or start selling computer hardware door-to-door to enter the contest. Just read the rules and regs below, and then fill out the form further down with answers to three easy questions about The Tech Report and your contact information. (We won’t share that information with anyone.)

Rules and regulations

Sorry, but this contest is open to residents of the U.S. and Canada only. By submitting an entry you are agreeing to these terms.

Fill out the form below, correctly answering three easy questions about TR and its history. Only one entry allowed per person, household, or e-mail address. Multiple entries per person, household or address are not permitted. Please don’t try to game the system by entering your girlfriend, wife, kids or pets. We’ll probably disqualify you if you do.

We will be accepting giveaway entries between November 6, 2009 and November 13, 2009 at 12:00 AM CST. Each day from November 9 through November 13, we will choose two to nine winners in random drawings from among all eligible entries received at that time. Then, on November 14, we will choose the winner of our grand prize (again in a random drawing from among all eligible entries). Randomly chosen winners are only eligible for a single prize each, and their chance of winning depends on the number of entries received. In total, there will be 27 winners of hardware donated by our sponsors. We will announce the names of winners on the site and also notify these winners via the e-mail addresses they provided in the submission form. Winners must respond by 12:00 AM CST on November 22, 2009, or another winner will be randomly chosen.

You must include your full name and a physical shipping address with your entry. Only the winners’ names will be announced on the site. We will not share the address or other personal information with our sponsors or anyone else. Incomplete entries will be disqualified. TR reserves the right to disqualify entries that appear to be attempts to game the system or circumvent the rules in any way.

The staff of The Tech Report and their immediate families may not enter the giveaway and are not eligible to win.

We will accept entries only from residents of the United States and Canada. No purchase is necessary. This giveaway is void where prohibited by law. Neither TR nor any of the sponsors are responsible for any taxes on the prize, damage in shipping, damage caused by using the prize with other products, or health issues such as RSI, eye strain, or chemical addictions that may result from prolonged use of the prize. We may answer questions and offer clarifications of the rules in this comments thread.

Questions

The answers to the questions below all lie somewhere on TR:

  • Question 1: TR forum members are ranked as different incarnations of which furry mammal?
  • Question 2: What nickname did we give to the loud cooler on the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra?
  • Question 3: The scatter plots in our value articles have two axes. One axis represents performance; what does the other axis represent?

The giveaway has ended.

I know this has been ask before, but why oh why, only US and Canadian folks get to participate on your contests/giveaways? I mean…ok…so the shipping options are perfect for the US/Canada, but…come…on…look at your logs, look at the IPs that were accessing this site, and map them out. I bet, Europe readers will be on par if not more than then “home boys”.

Because, you know, this is not fair. And you know it. I mean, ok…we get to read you for free. In return for our accessing of your site, you get traffic which you (probably ) translate into offering “exposure time” for potential clients which may advertise on this site.

Now, it’s great that you do this giveaway. And yes, you’re not force to do it. But if you do it, at least do it all the way. Give everyone a chance, since everyone contributed to your success.

This constant “US/Canada only” is…well….I was gonna say racism…but it’s like…”user-ism”, you know.

I’ll still read you folks, but come on….you know….as I said, you’re not forced to do it. But common sense demands it.

All the best and I hope for the 20th anniversary, us European folks (and I mean ALL EUROPEAN folks not just UK, Germany, France) will be able to participate to this.

I’m kinda confused are they going to post the winners on a day to day basis or as one big post at the end. I know we’ll all find out tomorrow but was just curious if any one knows in advance. ^^

edit:Nevermind TR already stepped up and ansewered my question. Should have been more pateint.

    Long Life Tech Report.

I have been here since the early part of year 2000 as an annonymous gerbil. That was when TR made fun of those infamous Apple speed claims (this was the start of the I’m Mac I’m PC BS) and way before the site got infected with Mac fanboys that we have lately.

Congrats on the 10 years, may the next 10 be even better. Now where are our jetpacks and flying cars?

I just realized I’ve been reading TR almost since the beginning, although I didn’t register an account until the last year or so. The first articles I read were the Athlon XP1900+ and Radeon 8500 reviews, both of which I ended up putting in my first PC I built. ๐Ÿ™‚

Wow. I started reading the Tech Report in late 2000, and I guess I never realized how long ago that was, or that Tech Report was only a year old at the time. Thanks for all the great articles; after all these years Tech Report is still my favorite tech site.

To all of you disappointed that the contest is limited to the US and Canada, we’ve got lots of room here in the states. I hear it’s pretty sparse up in Canada, too. Plus, they have doughnuts and hockey!

    Happy 10th birthday TR!

Slightly miffed at first to be geographically denied from entering, but if you keep saving me money by helping me choose the right hardware for at least another ten years, I’ll let you off. (Even companies with European offshoots like AMD limit contests to NA only, so it seems churlish to complain). Good luck to all the “locals”.

You’re kidding, right? Anyway, I’d rather see them come out one at a time as they’re awarded — it’s more fun that way, with a surprise every day. I’m sure there will be some kind of summary at the end anyway.

    • SecretMaster

My only question is does the TR staff review every entry by hand, or do they have a program that checks all the answers? I only ask because what if you pluralize the first answer?

      • derFunkenstein

Automate the first, take the failed entries and verify by hand.

      • MadManOriginal

If you pluralize it YOU LOSE, GOOD DAY SIR! ยง[<http://youloseanimated.ytmnd.com/<]ยง because the question is worded for a singular answer.

      • TurtlePerson2

They probably just pick an entry and if they have the right answers then they win. I would expect that most people will have the right answers since they’re easy to find if you don’t already know them.

Oddly enough, I was reintroduced to the IT industry after about a decade of absence, just about the time the GeForce 6 series was moving out and making way for the 7 series. AGP was still strong and many vendors made their cards in both formats.

Ironically, a demo PC I had recently acquired had an FX5600 Ultra (not the 5800), and at the time, I can tell ya it was not very Ultra. However, the P4 Northwood @ 3.2 GHz was still pretty darn potent.

TR has been here to help me sort out fact from hype, going on 5 years.

    • shakyone

    Congrats boys.

I’ve been visiting for three years now. I’ve downloaded and listened to every podcast at this point.

I stop by the site at least twice a day, just to see what’s new.

Keep up the fantastic work. I appreciate the ability to read a well organized tech website that stays in touch with the latest and greatest, and has sponsors providing the hardware to remain in the forefront.

Why don’t you change the rules so that readers outside of the US and Canada can enter, but maybe have to pay shipping themselves, or whatever it is that keeps you from including us outside of North America?

It is extremely disappointing as an everyday reader for years of this great site not to be able to enter these giveaways, just because I live in the wrong country.

Come on guys, we are almost writing 2010, shipping items across the Atlantic is not that difficult, trust me.

      • Scrotos

As a contest/sweepstakes, there’s probably some per-country laws that relate to “games of chance”. I think even Canada has some issues in some provinces where people have to take some type of competency test in order to claim their prize.

Plus, in addition to whatever fees/regulations TR would have to adhere to (do they have to register as an entity giving away stuff in various countries and pay for the registration on a yearly basis, for instance?) you also have the VAR/VAT stuff to deal with PLUS customs fees.

I sent some leftover hardware to a pal in England and he ended up paying like 40 pounds for junk that was worth 5 to 10 pounds to get it out of customs. When I bought a $1000 digital camera for a friend in Norway, he had me lie on the customs stuff and repack the camera so that he could avoid the fees which would have defeated the entire purpose of me buying the camera for him in the US–$1000 if I bought and shipped it, $1600 if he got it from a local vendor.

That stuff is just CRAZY. I am not speaking from authority for anyone from TR, but I can see that there are many other considerations than just shipping to another country. Hell, I was just shipping to another country and I ended up screwing my pal I was sending free stuff to!

        • Bauxite

Scrotos is on point, the international shipping market is geared towards large importers and the small business/regular joe can easily get burned. Just sending xmas gifts to relatives overseas is a crap shoot.

A lot of places use ‘retail value’ for fees which hasn’t been updated in forever or use original price even if its used so most things electronic are screwed, unless you have a tax license to pass it on.

Then of course theres all the places with corrupt ****heads that just straight up want a bribe…the big importers work around that or pay in bulk so it doesn’t kill their bottom line.

On top of this you have dealing with all the local laws for contests, who needs that PITA. I’m surprised they don’t have the usual quebec exclusion for canada, though I guess its just assumed with the general “This giveaway is void where prohibited by law”.

US customs isn’t bad thankfully, I get plenty of random small items from asia (fleabay) and most come through without a snag or fee.

I’ve been coming to the site, oh around 10 years now I guess. Part of the holy trinity that I read multiple times a day (Techreport, Arstechnica, HardOCP). Thanks, you’ve made me better at my job (I work with servers & OSes) and made me the person that friends, family, & neighbors call for tech support. Er, well, thanks for one of the two anyway, I’ll hold you blameless on the second count, since I assume that was not your stated intention.

    Keep up the good work!

      • Sahrin

Yeah – for me starting out it was [H], AT, Ars and TR. While I still read them all regularly, AT and Ars have become more and more Mac/CE Rags…and I’m getting sick of it. TR is the one hardware website that has truly stuck to its roots. Forget the BS, just good honest to goodness hardware news/reviews for and by people who love it. TR was instrumental in my first build (a Barton 2500+ with 9700 AiW Pro), and I’ve been coming back ever since. Congrats guys, and here’s to another ten more!

2nd major tech site giveaway this week. 2nd US-only competition.

    Geographic fail ๐Ÿ™

      • Stembolt73

Yes. Amazingly, even ten long years ago it was possible to send prizes to countries outside the US.

Stick your 10th anniversary where the sun don’t shine.

        • SNM

It’s legal issues, you moron. Running these competitions is surprisingly law-intensive.

          • The Dark One

Yeah, I’m surprised (and happy) they’re including Quebec in the contest. Our contest laws are usually different/stupid enough from the rest of the continent to disqualify us from most giveaways.

Wait until you win and they find that out.

SSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHH !! Don’t point it out to them or else they might remove it ! ๐Ÿ™

It may be awkward for hardware prizes, retard, but how much effort would it take to send out a few Steam/D2D codes? Not bloody much.

            • grantmeaname

the law doesn’t view those two things any differently. If you read the post you just so angrily criticized, you would realize that he was just saying the shipping ISN’T the significant part.

And calling people names is a poor way to build respect for yourself or your argument. That’s something you’ll learn as you get older, if you pay attention. (And that applies to everybody).

        • Bauxite

        Stuff your entitlement.

In all my years surfing the net, the only time I’ve ever seen a global-esque contest (w/ actual physical prizes crossing any oceans) was at bit-tech awhile back.

Go try to find other examples, good luck.

BTW, global companies with multiple corporate regions/physical presence don’t count.

Welcome to Tech Report! I can see that you are new here.

Did you join on Nov. 6, 2009 just so that you could treat us all to a bout of your verbal diarrhoea?

You fail, Canada is NOT part of the US

Hehe, good catch…still doesnt help the rest of us though ๐Ÿ˜‰

err the US is the greatest country in the Western world. Maybe that has something to do with it??

        • anotherengineer

Actually according to the UN, Canada outranks the US in most quality of life things ๐Ÿ˜€

Just occurred to me – I did those from memory. I hope I got them right.

Google answered all the questions for me!

        • SomeOtherGeek

You cheated! The shame. Just kidding, I did too for one of them. The treehouse one.

      • cygnus1

Dang, flubbed my first entry. Saw 5800 and thought the new ATI, then re-read it and saw it was FX 5800. Hopefully the first one just gets thrown out and entering a second time with the right answer is allowed.

        • derFunkenstein

        yeah I doubt it.

      • CampinCarl

haha yeah I did the same thing. But to any regular, they should be pretty familiar questions!

      • SNM

I just got a little confused since I doubt they actually made up the nickname for the FX5800 Ultra. But I checked the article and I didn’t see any other possibilities.

        • derFunkenstein

Yeah, without getting into spoilers I totally get what you’re saying.

        • UberGerbil

If you find the right article Damage takes credit for coining it and links to the first use; unless someone can find a reliably earlier use that takes precedence, he’s claimed it.

Same here. It didn’t tell me if I made a mistake or not so I hope I got it right =)

      • UberGerbil

I just hope I spelled them right.

Scatter plots? We have scatter plots?

They are included here and there.

          • UberGerbil

          I was mostly kidding.

            • Convert

I know, my response was a joke too, scatter plots, here and there.

We have axes too! Wow! Killing tools for bad days!

        • jackaroon

The scatter parts are the best part. It has been a little while though . . .

Nope you got them wrong, I checked, sorry sir. You can go cry now.

LOL so did I, things all hardcore [almost typed answer to question #1] TR readers should know by heart ๐Ÿ™‚

Aren’t you ineligible to win for like a year or something?

          • NeronetFi

Now how funny would that be if ssidbroadcast won 2 grand prizes in 30 days ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes, we would all be laughing at his funeral.

Kidding of course, I honestly wouldn’t mind if he won. I would like to win but having him win would be no different to me than anyone else. That is to say I would hate him equally.

I didn’t even have dial-up back in 1999, so I wasn’t on TR then, but I’ve been enjoying the site since I found it in 2005.
