Itanium prototypes shipping to manfacturers

As Intel stumbles a bit with its Coppermine rollout, the company is sending out prototypes of its true next-generation processor design. The CPU formerly known as Merced, Itanium, has been sampling in large enough quantities to make it out to Intel's partners, according to a story. Although the exact timetable isn't terribly clear, it looks as though Itanium-based computers will be available some time during the second half of 2000.
