Some publishers have escalated the fight against illicit game copying lately, with Ubisoft going so far as to require an uninterrupted connection to its authentication servers. That tactic quickly posed problems when said servers went down after being attacked in March.
As VideoGamer.com reports, Activision Blizzard purports to be taking another approach, focusing on content and features in an effort to encourage purchases. Here's what Blizzard co-founder and StarCraft II producer Frank Pearce told the site:
If we've done our job right and implemented Battle.net in a great way people will want to be connected while they're playing the single player campaign so they can stay connected to their friends on Battle.net and earn the achievements on Battle.net . . . . The best approach from our perspective is to make sure that you've got a full-featured platform that people want to play on, where their friends are, where the community is.
Pearce went on to point out that the number of folks willing to bypass copy protection always surpasses Blizzard's own head count. He added, "We need our development teams focused on content and cool features, not anti-piracy technology"—music to PC gamers' ears, surely.
