Super Talent touts ‘world’s first’ 4GB, 1600MHz SO-DIMM

Not everybody buys a laptop to cram it full of high-speed, high-density memory, but those who do might see the appeal in Super Talent’s latest SO-DIMM offering. The company says it’s started manufacturing the "world’s first" 4GB DDR3 SO-DIMM capable of running at up to 1,600MHz, and it now plans to kick off shipments.

That "world’s first" claim might not be unfounded. A quick look at Newegg shows the quickest 4GB SO-DIMM modules (and 8GB kits) listed are rated for operation at 1333MHz. I expect that speed would suffice for most laptops running at stock speeds, but folks wishing to attempt overclocking higher-end desktop replacements could appreciate the extra headroom.

Speaking of desktop replacements, Super Talent says it tested the new four-gig DDR3 SO-DIMM using HP’s Envy 17-1011NR "mobile workstation." That 17-inch, jumbo-sized notebook sells for just under $1,500 at Amazon and comes with a quad-core Core i7-720QM processor as well as Mobility Radeon HD 5850 discrete graphics. I don’t know if owners would be all that excited about a memory upgrade, though, considering the thing ships with 8GB of DDR3 RAM.

Might be something decent for the mini itx board users out there. Those machines make easy transport for LAN parties.

    Dear memory makers,

How about “world’s first” DDR3L so-dimms? Thanks for keeping your priorities straight.

I’d upgrade it to 16… It’s a mobile workstation, after all!
