TR reviews the ATI Radeon

Well, this should set the stage nicely for the impending GeForce3 launch. Have a look at my in-depth review of NVIDIA's toughest competition, the ATI Radeon. (As with our previous video card reviews, we're not kidding about that in-depth thing, either. Though we promise not to bore you to tears.)

We cover a lot of ground in the review, and seriously, it's a nice snapshot of the state of PC graphics at present. We've used the latest drivers, tested in a couple flavors of Windows, and run our benchmarks on a 1.5GHz Pentium 4 system, just to keep things interesting. Here's a snippet from the review:

ATI designed the Radeon to compete in a fiercely competitive graphics market, and they managed to produce a chip that is, in many ways, the pinnacle of the current paradigm for real-time 3D rendering using lighted, textured polygons. The Radeon has nearly every important feature of every graphics chip that came before it, plus a bundle of new tricks of its own. It's a summarization in silicon of where things stand now in PC graphics.

The big question for the Radeon, though, is how it stacks up against NVIDIA's variation on that same theme. It's only a minor exaggeration to say the GeForce line of chips has cleared out the top end of the graphics market like a wrecking ball, knocking off S3 and 3dfx, and sending Matrox and Intel to cower in their low-end niches of the market. It seems only ATI, a perennial graphics sales leader thanks to fat, high-volume OEM contracts, has the financial and technical muscle to keep up with NVIDIA now.
