DICE shows glimpses of Battlefield 3 gameplay

The first Battlefield 3 trailer might have been exciting, but it didn’t really reveal anything from the actual game. EA DICE has made up for it with a second trailer, which reveals a few brief seconds of gameplay. The new trailer has made it onto YouTube:

Assuming we are looking at genuine, real-time gameplay here, I’m impressed. We already knew the game is being built around a new engine, Frostbite 2.0, and is being designed chiefly for the PC, according to its executive producer, but that looks like impressive graphical fidelity. I’m getting the impression that this game uses more elaborate shader effects and higher-polygon geometry than other, similar titles like the Call of Duty seriesβ€”just look at the smooth soft shadows, the light beams peering through those windows, and those character models. (Thanks to Rock, Paper, Shotgun for the tip.)

It does not look like game play. This is CGI but I hope I am wrong.

There’s some amazing features I’d like to see. Opening a door using the door knob, and being able to lay prone. Yeah I know high tech stuff, I hope they can pull it off.

To be honest from the trailer it looks like a CoD clone, only with better graphics. I’m going to reserve my judgement till I see a ‘actual’ gameplay trailer, but given the recent trend of games, I’m not going to get my hopes up.

And FFS put better anti-cheat tech in games. No one likes being continually headshot from across the map by someone who is just firing full auto into the distance because his crosshairs always snap to peoples faces. At the very least there should’ve been observer in BC2 with first person view. PB and VAC are jokes.

I presonally always found dedicated servers allow the community to resolve alot of these issues. I’m expecting that BF3 will have them again πŸ™‚

I also don’t feel like it looks like a COD clone, COD is the michael bay of military shooters. This has a much more grounded look to it even more than medal of honor had. Hopefully it will have a really great SP/Co-op campaign and even better MP.

Dice: Keep it a battle game. Don’t make the same mistake Crysis did moving to a Halo look. I will buy any game from you since it is a battlefild modern game, nothing futuristic.

      • kamikaziechameleon

Yeah Crysis lost something for each feature gained so far, I still hold out hope and will likely buy the game but I’m concerned. As for BF3, less glitches and more maps, jets, prone, 64 players, I’m sold how on earth can people call it a COD clone when the square footage of all the COD maps will most likely fit into one BF3 map. lol

Still waiting for the first trailer to show the improved destruction engine. That, along with massive vehicular combat, is what is going to sell this game. And hopefully bring an end to the industry’s obsession with CoD.

COD hasn’t improved notably since COD 4, 4 years ago. Mean while BF has introduced so much awesomeness. I to hope that they get around to showing us the features that are battlefield in the near future. I guess it was cool to see a trailer with footage that kinda blew away COD at its own game though, lol.

You know… I could care less if BF3 looks like BF2, if DICE could ever manage to make a game that isn’t buggy it would make me much happier than just another step in graphics.

EDIT: Just watched it again. Why is their an expansion pack to a game not even close to release advertised at the end of its first gameplay trailer?

      • morphine

Because it’s now 2011, the whole “DLC” thing was introduced 2-3 years ago and the big publishers do indeed get away with the “make people pay for things that should belong in the game in the first place” plan. Because far too many do.

No, I’m not a Luddite, and yes, I’ve bought expansion packs aka DLC in the past. But only when I felt that there was actual [i<]added[/i<] value to be had.

DLC is the anti resale mechanism they use. Someone else pointed out in here that steam DLC is all free (for valve games) because there is no resale on those games they make way more money, can cut the prices down really fast and afford free support for them. Most PC DLC is generated to offset console resales more than pc piracy.

Perhaps I just feel that the gritty war thing has been beat to death. Another thing is I simply cannot play these games online. After recieving my 10th headshot in as many minutes and having my sexuality questioned by what sounds like a 10 year old girl I want to hurl the controller across the room.

In anticipation of Crysis 2, I’m playing Crysis at the moment and enjoying it. Preordered Portal 2 as well. They will satisfy my fps itch.

          • kamikaziechameleon

1 death per minute is not a bad ratio really considering how intense most fire fights are but it isn’t unusual for me to go 20min-1 hour without a death if I’m in a good squad. I don’t love COD very much because I find it rather unbalance and unpolished for being ultimately a deathmatch game. Spawn killing hasn’t been an issue for MP games for a decade but infinity ward was missing it so they brought it back. Battlefield however, if on a good server I can typically resolve any issue I have with the game by stepping back and just thinking about a situation. If you are getting sniped to much maybe you need to consider a sniper or my favorite an anti sniper class(Anti sniper: gustav and duoble barrel shotgun with extended range and damage or the RPG and a tracer dart depending) If you feel you are to close to the action spawn further away and survey the situation, work with your squad. You can through the squad system play battlefield like a co-op game. If you don’t it is a completely different experience.

Playing BF with strangers is akin to playing L4D with AI only. So perhaps you are simply not experiencing the game the way it was designed to be experienced. If you put in the time for a community experience ala squad play then BF rewards you in spades. I have yet to have a bad time playing that game in a squad of 3 friends. I would however challenge the devs to make it easier for a squad of friends to form up.

Just my 2 cents. I too look forward to crysis 2 and portal 2.

Edit: not to say battlefield games are polished, they are anything but, I can’t remember a smooth launch honestly. They do succeed with solid core gameplay and a very good core game mode or two however and for that I really appreciate them.

BC2 isn’t that well threaded for the amount of work it does. My GPU load, according to the MSI graph, rarely breaks 40% unless in a tank or HBAO is enabled. I’m only running 2xAA though. Whatever shaders they use for the “video screen” in the tank seem to cause a fairly large load.

I’m even running TF2 at 8xAA with everything cranked and HDR/etc, and my GPU load is only 30%.

The new ATI cards this fall are supposed to be MUCH more powerful. Can’t wait :p

      • TREE

Yea, I can confirm this. I have a Q9550 and a GTX 280 and I am lucky to get a over 80% GPU usage whilst maintaing a stable 60 FPS. If I want to tax the GPU more I have to turn on things like CSAA and HBAO lighting. If I overclock the CPU I get a higher GPU usage in general and a more consistant FPS.

From an educated guess it would seem that there is a few render display list stalls taking place at some point during the render loop. Hence why only a portion of the GPU’s compute capablity is being used when the graphical fidelity is set around the medium / high mark.

I had a rough time with BF2 Bad Company when it first came out. I was having a lot of fun playing in the beta. I thought wow,.. this will be a really great game once it goes retail. As soon as it hit Steam I got a copy. But the lag, server bugs, the menu system and server browser all sucked bad. Sometimes I would go days where I couldnt connect or would get bounced out of servers immediately after connecting. I couldnt play for days at a time and this went on for weeks. I was really upset and left many pissy posts on forums about it.

Its still not perfect. But its come a long way. I just wish they had worked out those issues before it went retail instead. Would have been a lot less P.O’d people. Hopefully they’ve figured it out by now and BF3 wont be as bad. Somehow I will believe it when I see it. I’ve been playing the BF games since way back when 1942 first came out. I used the scuttle the carrier on purpose,.. made it easier to get on land when everyone was fighting each other for a plane. LOL. But looking back,.. with each new release we’ve all had a rough time trying to play the game until all the bugs and work around got fixed.

I’m looking forward to BF3. I love these kinds of games. And yes,.. I hope we get to go prone in this one. They should at least allow the snipers to prone so they can hide better.

I’m not sure it will use all of your 16GB, but it is “possible” :p

Thanks bronce, It would be crazy if it used all 16 Gb. If this is a truely 64 bit game then it will be the first. Crysis ran worse in 64 bit ironically so did UT 2004. You’d think with 4-12 cores to use that more games would want to cache/buffer more than 4 Gb of data. I imagine the load times would be horrible though so until SSD is a mainstream acronym we probably will not see them exceed that envelope. I think that SSD will lead the next revolution in gaming tech/preformance. To bad they are so darn expensive, where are the 1TB 80 dollar drives πŸ˜›

Right now I feel like the two top contentders for first person shooting are battlefield and call of duty. If this game delivers and tops call of duty will Activision give COD the guitar hero treatment and depend on blizzard to stay afloat? Will we finally see a change to the COD games since we really haven’t since COD4?

If this game is polished and solid it may crush all competition on the market outright and change the COD shooter landscape that we see today.

I’m so pumped, I wonder if they will finally put a good sp in there, meaning story story story(bad company doesn’t have a “good” story). That’s how they combat resale losses. Do you see expensive DLC for Steam games? No, you see the entire game selling for DLC-esque prices!

If a $60 copy of BF3 is resold to five other people along its lifespan (six total owners), EA could’ve sold the game to each one of those people for $10 and made the same amount of money. I bet every one of those gamers paid [i<]at least[/i<] $10 for that used game. That's how the resale middle man makes his money and starves the developers. So that's how Steam can sell AAA titles for $15-20 two or three months after their release and still make a profit, they have no resale market to compete against.
