Poll: What’s your pick of upcoming games?

We’re set for a bumper crop of top-flight games in 2011, and the toughest part of the story may simply be choosing which games to buy and play. Our poll question today asks which of the year’s big upcoming games you’re most anticipating. There were too many choices to list them all, so feel free to choose "other" if we’ve missed your favorite.

Oh, and the results from our last poll about your data backup practices were revealing, especially since 20% of TR readers—I said 20% of TR readers, of all things—chose "Gonna lose everything if my hard drive dies." I’m glad you guys are honest, but… really?

I guess all those "Deal of the week" posts with cheap 2TB hard drives were lost on some of you. Two more tidbits for your consideration: BlacX and Windows Backup. It’s easy.

Among the protected, our leading option was backing up data to an external hard drive at 35%, followed by the together-sounding "multiple methods" at 19%. 15% use a NAS device of some sort, while optical disks, online backups services, and USB thumb drives each captured 4% of the vote. Tape and memory cards captured a total of 23 votes betwen them, under 1%.

All these games are sequels, that sucks. I don’t know of any games I’m looking forward too right now.

I thought there’d be more interest in Rage! Seems like a lot of these games are sequels, which is fine, but I haven’t played very many of the first ones. So I’m looking forward to Rage….hopefully Carmack is cooking up something awesome for us.

There would probably be more interest if their last major game wasn’t Doom 3, which was a bit of a letdown (and that was 7 years ago…an eternity in this industry). Us “oldschool” PC gamers instantly recognize the ID software name, but I don’t think they are seen as “developer gods” as they used to be. Quake II and Wolf3d were some of the best games ever made IMO, but nothing from them in the last 10 years has been that amazing.

It’s like a great band who made some amazing albums 20 years ago, but everything lately has been “meh”, so it’s hard to get excited about a new album.

I feel there are a lot of potentially good games, but nothing great. Personally, Im tied between Batman and Battlefield 3.

Elder Scrolls could be good, though the previous game was so exhausting to play.

And, no mention of The Old Republic? This is still suppose to still be released this year.

Diablo III and Blizzard hidden project

      • dashbarron

There’s no hidden project release this year; I believe Diablo III was suppose to be it, so I’m rooting that it will still happen but not keeping hopes up.

        • nanoflower

Diablo III will be fun when it is finally released but who knows if they will release it this year or just go with the 2nd part of Starcraft II. As for the hidden project isn’t that supposed to be another MMO like WOW? I’m not interested in paying for a game and then having to pay a monthly subscription fee. Especially given that even with a game like Diablo I/II and III I’ll spend more time play offline than I will online.

          • dashbarron

          Three things here.

          1) All we know is that the new project is (code) named “Titan” and at one time there was a secret MMO project code-named “Hydra” (rather these are both the same, I don’t know); Titan is suppose to be a new IP though. If I’m not mixing names and such, there was an identical game/project being produced by Ensemble Studios who Microsoft bought out and then shut down. Some of the employees are rumored are to now work for Blizzard, Ghostcrawler, a bigwig developer/designer is one of them. Titan was a Halo MMO game, so if conspiracies are to be believed, that this will be a space FPS MMO game. Afterall, Blizzard has been trying to get a console and PC FPS game on the market with their name on it for years, and it would be “new and exciting” development territory for them. My logical understand of Blizzard tells me that they will not publish a game which will be similar to another one of their games to steal its thunder. No WoW/D3 clone.

          2) Diablo III is probably next on the list and I kind of believe they had meant it for this year. Don’t buy into any crap that the new secret IP they are working on (or two secret new games that are rumored) will magically appear by the end of the year. Any company would like to get some PR and press frenzy ramped up before releasing a game; they are not going to announce a game and then release it a month later. Keep in mind too, that Blizzard has said repeatedly they are pushing for one new release a year. Expansion, new game, whatever. It’s only Feb, but I believe Diablo 2 was there mark. The only thing else they could push out would be the new saga in the SC2 campaigns. They’ve also said that if they miss their schedule of releasing one game in a year, then there will just be two the next year.

          3) While I agree with you, I like playing D2 in single player it seems pretty obvious Blizzard is pushing for people to stay connected and play online. I think they’re trying to forge the game and the entire experience to remain multilayer friendly: keeping rewards profitable for those who play online and experience immerse enough you never have to leave it or B.net.

Diablo III gets my vote as well though if I don’t get a release date by Blizzcon at the latest, I won’t know what to think. Sequels shouldn’t take a decade to materalize but my guess is it will be worth the wait (protracted as the wait may be).

The poll is still missing from the news.x page. I know it’s probably not a priority, but I have to click on the post every time I want to vote and only if I see the post come up before the poll is done. πŸ™

That aside, very close vote. This year should be a decent year for video games, although I’m not setting my expectations high. ME3 should be good, but it doesn’t have multiplayer and thus not much replayability. DNF? who knows what that will be like till we play it. Crysis 2 is more then likely just going to be a bunch of eye candy. GW2 should be decent and at the very least a successor of GW. Skyrim should also be good, but much like ME3 it lacks mutliplayer and as such it cuts down on the replayability. However, Elder Scrolls are traditionally extremely long so I’m assuming most people will get sick of the game before they worry about that.

That pretty much just leaves BF3, that was my vote. I suppose I’ll get to see if one of my favorite series got trashed by consolization too.

    • ThorAxe

Crysis 2 then BF3 are my picks by a long way but there are a lot of good games on the list and a few that didn’t make the list like Witcher 2. If HL3 ever gets announced it would be probably be at the top.

    • clone

I’m really surprised if not a little worried with the results being so widely dispersed how that will impact gaming budgets if no “blockbuster” leaps forward to garner investment capitals notice.

I guess if the results show that ppl will be buying multiple games this year then it’ll be fine at least I hope.

I’m not surprised Rage is showing so poorly, ID products have been so weak for so long and Rage looks….. bleh.. aka like all previous ID product, desperate for a real storyline to immerse the player into.

P.S. I voted for DNF because the trailer got my interest but really if Stalker 2 comes out I’m 100% sure I’d buy it before anything in the poll.

    absolutely love the Stalker series.

The Witcher 2 is what interests me the most for the year, with Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 3 pulling up 2nd and 3rd places.

One little detail I like from screenshots of The Witcher 2 is that Geralt’s swords have scabbards, I can’t actually remember an RPG I’ve played where the character’s weapons had scabbards. A small detail, but the little ones are sometimes the nicest.

      • NeXus 6

IIRC, the first game was ignored until word spread that it was one of the best games of 2000. The third game is just getting overshadowed because there are so many other big games coming out this year and because the Deus Ex crowd are a picky bunch. I have my doubts about the new game, but the trailers do make it appear that it won’t be the disappointment that DX:IW was.

        • sjl

        This.

DX:IW wasn’t a bad game, taken on its own. It’s just that, in comparison with the scope of the first game, it felt cramped – sort of the difference between a full meal and a snack; some of the choices felt rather forced (in the sense that, okay, you can see why you might go with the Order or the WTO, but the suggestion that you might side with the Templar, when they’ve been so antagonistic throughout the game…) All signs suggest that the team working on DX:HR understand what caused DX:IW to be so disappointing, and they’re trying to avoid a repeat performance. We shall see; I’m not expecting the heights of DX1 to be reached, but I do think (hope?) DX:HR will be a close second in quality.

Haha, be prepared to wait for a looonnnnggg time πŸ™‚

My vote *would* have been for Dragon Age II if I hadn’t just played the demo…not impressed.

So then it would be Skyrim, except then I remembered how much fun I had with Batman AA on PS3.

End result, from what I’ve seen so far of both, I gotta go with Bats.

      • thesmileman

Dragon Age II demo did suck. I loved the first and this one felt dumbed down for consoles. I was hoping the game would get more complex.

        • mcnabney

I thought the same after the demo, but remember you essentially only complete a segment of prologue and one mid-level mission. Absolutely no character development or decision making required. You can’t even adjust your inventory in the demo. A demo of the original Dragon Age would be boring too if all you did was storm the tower in the prologue and run through the ‘free the queen’ mission in the mid-game. The fun part about Dragon Age happened between the battles, and obviously that can’t be packaged for a demo.

I was annoyed at the console/Japanification of combat. Seriously, is everyone in Feraldon the most amazing martial arts master. Can you really swing a 2H sword or battle axe that fast? Does everyone carry around swords that are 6-8′ long? Here’s to hoping that a PC-mod will take the ludicrous speed out of combat.

          • crazybus

Have they actually significantly changed the game mechanics? Complaining about the realism of combat animations in a game where you’re fighting giant ogres and dragons seems a little strange. As long as the combat remains tactical, I don’t mind seeing cool finishing moves.

            • mcnabney

No, every move is an amazing, lightning fast combo. Characters are whipping around 2-handed swords that are 6-8′ long like a lightsaber in the prequels. Seriously, the body-counts are massive. Expect to slay 5-8k enemies in the course of the game.

Also, regular difficulty eliminates friendly fire from spells. So on the standard setting, feel free to lob fireballs right on top of your tank. <rolls eyes>

Yeah, the ‘medieval fantasy’ aspects are gone and we get more Final Fantasy XXXVII

          • TurtlePerson2

I don’t understand why someone would release a demo of a game like this. You don’t get a good feel for what makes a Bioware RPG special unless you play long enough to see your choices have an impact on the game world. They’d probably be better off if they let people play the first three hours of the game and then allowed you to upgrade to the full version to continue playing.

    • HunterZ

    Yes:

Dragon Age II: Still haven’t finished the first one. Waiting for a sale on Ultimate edition now as well.

Skyrim: Looking forward to this, but have played all 4 previous TES games when they were new-ish (and again many times since) and never finished a single one. Bethesda is also DLC-happy, so I’ll be waiting for a discounted GOTY/deluxe edition in 2012.

Mass Effect 3: Will buy this eventually because I finished ME1 and am playing ME2, and I have enjoyed them both. Bioware is also DLC-happy, though, so I will likely wait for some kind of sale to avoid racking up over $100 in cost on one game plus DLC.

Deus Ex: Will play this eventually. Deus Ex 1 is my favorite FPS of all time. DX2 was decent on its own but mediocre compared to DX1, so I’m not getting my hopes up on DX:HR.

    Maybe:

Portal 2: Liked but not loved the first one. May pick it up on a Steam sale.

Batman: Picked up Asylum but haven’t played it much. Seems fun though.

    No:

Guild Wars 2: Didn’t like the first one.

WoW: Quit over a year ago and haven’t looked back! No more MMOs for me if I can help it!

ME2 was great story wise, and graphics wise, but I wasn’t a fan of the combat and item systems compared to ME1. I liked collecting different armors and pistols and what not and comparing specs. I also liked being able to use all kinds of weapons.

That, and ME2 was on rails. Good story though. I have import-saves ready to try out – not sure whether blowing up the Collector base is a good thing or not.

probably not a good thing considering the Reapers are going to be making a bee-line straight to Earth in the next game. Your actions probably will result in in costing billions of fake lives. Can you live with that?

How was it any more on-rails than ME1? No side missions with the same rubber-stamp base / ship / cave?

Most of your missions were done to acquire your crew. I hardly got to know any of them. A lot of the language revolves around this epic journey you have had with your ship and teammates, but you only do 1 missions after you assemble your entire team. You make one choice, blow up the station or not. You didn’t have an inventory, you just upgraded weapons. There were no tactics required – just run and hide behind cover.

ME1 was at least ten hours longer than ME2 because I had to spend that time sorting vendor trash. The only thing I’d ever want them to bring back is the Mako, provided I don’t need to drive it up 90ΒΊ hills.

See thats what I liked doing. To each their own I guess. I also did not like the clip/heatsink system in 2. I still don’t understand it and how which ammo applied to which gun type/etc. Just go back to the heat setup in 1.

Really? A -1 for saying that we like different things?

    FTISR STOP

Several “Other” votes so far, yet not a single comment specifying exactly *what* it might be. Myself, I voted for Duke Nukem Forever out of brand loyalty.

Edit: as of 15 votes, not a single one went to Crysis 2 or Rage. If this trend continues, it might signal that the haze of the impending consolitis is turning people off Crysis, and Rage… well let’s just say, there’s been enough delays already, they’re off the hype wagon.

I think Rage coming out on the iPhone first kind of turned me off of it.

Crysis, meh, it was a pretty game, but that is all that it was. Not too excited about a sequel.
